Unhappy pressure in temples/pain in ear

My husband and I moved to St.Augustine, Fl last DEC. By January, I was getting nasal congestion pretty often..As time went on, I would, also, feel pressure in my ears. Even if I would pop them they would still feel full. I finally relented and went to an Allergist..Had the tests and now I am on the shots twice weekly. I am also taking Zyrtek-D on a daily basis along with a nasal spray that was also prescribed. It seemed to work at first. I have lost all reference of time and when certain symptoms started to appear. I will try my best to remember. About a month or so ago, I started getting real bad pressure in both ears which in turn would cause headaches...headache feels like both temples are in a vice and it is tightened up on my head..I went to an ENT doctor at the Mayo Clinic here approx. 2 1/2 weeks ago..They checked my hearing and it was fine. Doctor also looked into my ears and nose and he said he did not see anything. At the time, I was only having mostly the ear pressure problems..Now, these headaches are everyday and they last all day..Just bad enough to make you want not do a whole lot. While I was at my Allergist's office last Monday, I told her of this pain I am having in my R-ear..If, I push from underneath my ear upwards it really causes some pain..She looked in my ear again and said that she saw some redness on my tympanic membrane..I looked that up and it is just another word for eardrum..She prescribed an antibiotic,Zythromax..I started on it on Monday and I really have not noticed an improvement at all. I also spray Rhinocort in my nose daily as well. I know I do not have an ear infection. I can really feel the pressure pain as well in my teeth right now. My sinuses looked fine according to the ENT doctor..This is so confusing as well as scarey to me. I called the Mayo Clinic today hoping to get in with the ENT doctor this Friday, but, I cannot see him for another week. Makes me mad when that happens. If I were the doctor's wife, I would be in there today. I am 53 so at my age pain has to be taken more seriously. I did the same thing as I see a lot on here have done as well and that is to look up symptoms of certain ailments. I always thought that if one has a brain tumor you only have pain on the side or the area where it is located, but, according to one site, you can have a feeling of pressure on both sides of your head...BOY OH BOY. My headaches fit that description. I have looked at all the entries on here and see none that are like mine so I thought I would put my situation in here and see if anyone has had these symptoms..I am wondering if I am allergic to something else where I live...but, I am sure the ALLERGIST covers everything in their tests..I am on a golf course near a pond as well as the conservation areas which have marshy areas..wonder about the molds, but according to my tests I did not show a reaction to mold..Go figure....Nothing is ever black or white with me...It is always gray..Nothing definitive..The waiting to see a doctor is what always gets to me..My mind will play into all the pessimistic things that could be wrong with me..Well, thanks for listening to me..I just wish I could have one day free of this dull nagging pressure pain...Christine

My symptoms are very similar. Briefly, plugged ears, nasal pain, teeth pain, facial numbness and stiff neck. Once a month I have migraine with aura. The doctor believes that these are unrelated. Ten years ago I had a mucous plug removed from my right sinus. It brought immediate relief. According to my internist I don't meet the criteria for a CT scan. Let me know of your progress. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Your symptoms sound consistent with sinus problems or sinusitis. Why not ask the doc to run a set of sinus x-rays to check it that is the cause. Also since the Zyrtec-D is not helping your ear pressure/fullness you may need a different medication that will work better for you. Ask your doc about this too. If it turns out not to be sinus then I am not sure what it might be. Sinus x-rays are definatley a good idea though.

I was diagnosed with a non-cancerous brain tumor in April. It is called accoustic neuroma. My symptoms included the pressure type headaches, ear pain, neck pain, tiredness, ringing in the ear and extreme pain behind my eyes. My tumor is 1.5 cm on the left side.I had a cat scan in March. I had a hearing test to discover I also lost 2/3rds of my hearing on that side. I had a MRI done and gamma knife radiation in Marshfield,WI in June. I will have another MRI in Nov. Hopefully it will show the tumor dying and shrinking. I was told my tumor has been there for about 5 years. Listen to your body. They told me not to go to Mayo. Check another hospital out. I can help you. Diane

Thanks, Diabi, for replying to my message...I have not been on for a while...I am sorry to hear of your tumor...but glad that it is benign..I love the word "benign". I did have an ear test and my hearing is fine. Doctor said my sinuses looked ok as well..I don't get the headaches as often...but today I did have one...not as bad as the ones I was having. This one today may have been related to the barometric pressure outside..Cloudy day with thunderstorms this evening. Hopefully, this is all related to something evironmental or to my allergies..I do hope that things will work out for you in November...Keep me posted as well...I will be thinking of you..Take care and stay safe...Thanks again, Christine

Prendi......Do let me know what the "doc" tells you..I am not having the headaches as often these days..I went back to Mayo and saw my ENT again the other day..I am not having the pain in my ear anymore, although, I do have some pressure in my R ear..not as bad as before, though. Did have a pressure headache today...it was cloudy and stormy a bit tonite, so, hopefully, it was because of the barometric pressure change..The antibiotic did help the pain in my R ear as well...Maybe, I did have some kind of an infection, but my allergist said that most of the redness has subsided as well...very strange...I always have things wrong that are always gray....Never Black or White...Well, keep me posted on your progress and thanks again for replying to my post..Take care of yourself and I do hope you are feeling better soon...This can be maddening as well...Christine

Have you had a check up at the dentist lately? There are a whole bunch of people that due to normal tooth wear, changes the position of your lower jaw joint, putting pressure on the ear, and the canal. This can lead to sinus blocking because it affects the normal drainage, and pressure on the nerve endings Check to see if your dentist does a Cephalagraphic X-ray. It's a whole head type of x-ray that goes from one side to the other. A good dentist or specialist should be able to tell if that's your problem. I have heard of people that gave up on their headaches, only to find relief.
    Good Luck, and God Bless

Yes, same thing ...have your atlas (c-1) checked out. Mine was displaced slightly, causing pressure in my skull, face, and fullness in both ears. Thought it was sinus trouble, tumor, etc. took 4 yrs to find the problem. I'm on a mission to help all I can who suffer from this horrible, hard-to-find headache. Worth checking out!!

Re: pressure in temples/pain in ear

You need to check with your dentist. I just went through the same thing. Around Thanksgiving I thought I was going to die. My whole head tightened up. I had pain everywhere but mostly on the left side. I didn't know if I had several toothaches, pain in temple area, pain in jaw area, headaches, eye pain, and ear pain. Turned out that I had TMJ, and I was grinding my teeth at night. Now wear a night guard and things are slowly improving. This condition can cause all kinds of symptoms.

Re: pressure in temples/pain in ear

Dear Christina, I am sorry to hear that you are having such pain. I also, have suffered from headaches for over 10 years and have had 3 sinus surgeries, all the migraine abortive and preventives, and even dhe treatments in the hospital, trying to get to the bottom of the pain I was in. Finally, last year went to a neurologist, that checked me out, and was sent to a neuro-optimologist. They deal with neurological disorders that also deal with vision problems. Told them I had on going, severe headaches, pain and pressure behind my eyes, blurry vision, ringing ears, pain worse when bending over, stiff neck and shoulders, etc. They did a spinal tap on me and found me to have high pressure around my brain. The short name for this disease is PTC. It means pseudo-tumor cerebri. It is caused from too much spinal fluid around the brain, and the symptoms are almost exactly like a brain tumor, without the real tumor. Medication can help, but for me, had to get a lumbar shunt, a year after diagnoses to get the pressure down. I am hoping you don't have this, but is a suggestion for all of us with daily headaches to have it checked out. This is a fairly rare disease, so alot of dr's don't know very much about it. Good luck and God Bless,Susan
