Persistent One-Sided Headache -- Any Help???

    Hi,

I've been having a persistent headache on the right side of my head for the past three months (since Thanksgiving 2010). It doesn't go away ever, never gets better, though sometimes it does get more intense.

I have slight swelling of my optic nerves (both sides), and some puffiness around my right eye (especially the upper lid). My visual field tests were normal, though sometimes I do get blurry vision in my right eye.

I've had 2 MRIs -- 1 without, and 1 with contrast -- both were completely normal. I just had a lumbar puncture to check my opening CSF pressure for pseudotumor and it was normal, so that's been ruled out.

My neurologist is back to thinking it's migraines, but I'm not convinced. I have no light/sound sensitivity, never get nausea, and the headache is a steady pain (no throbbing). He's also ruled out cluster headaches.

Any other ideas??? I'm at a loss, and am so frustrated. I've had this headache for so long I've named it! I'm tired of taking Topamax (which hasn't helped me in months), and since this headache started, I no longer sleep, so now I have to take amitriptline to sleep at night, too. Any help you can offer would be really appreciated!

    Hello Amandar7,

The MRI's coming out normal is usually a good thing. They are looking for bad things that could cause the headache. My main pain is also behind the right eye, I can go blind, lose the ability to hold a conversation, and my autonomic system goes on the fritz.

Keep working with your neurologist. Solving headaches is a drawn out and frustrating process. Amitriptline for headaches is not so abnormal. If you have not yet done so already start a headache journal, they can be found on the internet.

Hang in there and give your neurologist some time. Mine is a headache specialist but it took him about a year to fully pin down my issues.

Re: Persistent One-Sided Headache -- Any Help???

I had a moderately painful one sided headache for approximately 2 months. I would wake up just fine but the headache would set in around mid day. It would subside in the late evening (after I showered) right before bedtime. I was extremely stressed at the time and I thought there was something seriously wrong. I did have high blood pressure 150/110 but one day it just stopped. I have since been put on lisinopril for hypertension but the headache stopped a month before I started taking the medication. Very strange but just wanted everyone that's worrying about to hear my experience. Now that I think back I think it was caused by a combination of sleep apnea, Stress/anxiety at work, and TMD(same side). 35 Y/O male
