    Medicaid Assets

My friend is uninsured, ill and will not live without a very expensive surgery. Her income is low enough to qualify for Medicaid. The barrier I see to her qualifying, though, is a fund his family set up many years ago to help her buy a house. It is above the asset limit, but is a small amount compared to the cost of the surgery. She has not touched the money and rents. Is there a legal way to transfer the funds to a family member so she is not over the asset limit? Or, should she put the money towards an inexpensive home, since homes are exempt, and then apply? Any guidance is appreciated.

I think you need ask an attorney. he will need to see the documents which set up the fund. Call you local Bar Association office. They can often refer you to someone who will advise her pro bono - for free.
