Medi-Cal insurance coverages

Hi, I'm am a diagnosed diabetic and am covered under Medi-Cal (california medicaid program).

The Doctor I go to recently said Medi-Cal now no longer covers (fully) my outpatient services and medication, and that I would have to pay over $500/visit if I want to receive medical help.

Obviously since I'm under Medi-Cal, I'm at a poverty level and cannot afford to pay these semi-monthly visits of over $500.

Is the hospital trying to strong arm me for my money, or did they (the government) reduce the amount of coverage I receive for my diabetes treatments? I've been diabetic since ~2004 and haven't had to pay out of pocket costs until now.

Re: Medi-Cal insurance coverages

What the California state government did was reduce reimbursement rates. Not specifically for diabetes, for all kinds of services, and now it's just not enough. I suppose the hospital felt they were up against a wall: Charge patients the difference between the reimbursed amount and the actual cost of care, or go out of business.

Still, $500 surcharge per visit seems pretty extreme. Most office visits only cost $100-$200 altogether, and most patients with public health care simply don't have that kind of money. You could try calling around to other providers and see what happens.
