Question about SSI approval?

My daughter went to a specialist and they said she is globally delayed. Which means she is delayed in everything. I was told she could qualify for SSI and so I applied with an advocates help. I got a letter saying they would like her to see their doctor but they said she would be going for a speech evalution. I took her and their doctor said she was severely delayed in speech. So my question is, do you think she will get approved? This is our first time applying and I've heard a lot of people say you will usually get denied the first time you apply and also they told me they usually deny your claim after they send you to their doctor. I need some opinions on this? What do you think is going on?

Re: Question about SSI approval?

I went threw the same thing with my son when he was 2 years old. He also has a severe speach delay and I applied for the childrens disability program. With in three weeks after applying I was sent an award letter for SSI and I was informed he would be recieving Medicaid . They didnt send me to there doctor though. I just sent his medical records from his primary care doctor, HIS IEP testing info, and all his documentation from his speach therapist. I think she will be approved the first time. Just make sure you provide the proper documents. It seems to me that they feel there is something wrong but, you may have not given them enough medical documentation so they sent you to there doctor to verify her condition and get a second opinion. They usually deny adults the first time not children unless they feel there really isnt a disability. I think everything will be fine and she will be approved! Keep me posted on the outcome and good luck!!

Re: Question about SSI approval?

Yes most likely they will deny you and they will send her to their doctor/s. Don't give up have ALL of your medical records available all the way back to when she was first diagnosed,if you do alot of the leg work the faster the process will go and the less work the attorney will have to do and charge you.I had to hire an attorney based on contingency and I won it took me two 2yrs but I hung in there. If she is eligible for SSI then you fight for it. Good-luck.

Re: Question about SSI approval?

From my experience the SSI board moves in mysterious ways. I applied on my own, sent them all of my medical records and was denied . I then applied again and I sent them no additional records and was approved...same information, denied first then approved. For a young child they have to be more thorough because she will get almost a whole lifetime of benefits. If their doctor came up with that diagnosis I see no reason for denial however if she is denied you should beef up her records by seeing other doctors or getting her into some type of therapy. The more information they can analyze the better your chances. Hope this helps

i dont know but dont give up. its usually a long drawn out process. just keep praying for strength. a lady i know of had cancer and was in the last few months of her life and was still denied. another lady had 6 heart attacks and major back / neck surgery and she was denied and had to reapply with a attorney and finally got it after the prayer list prayed for her.

Re: Question about SSI approval?

Yes, you can get approved on the first try. I applied in July of this year and have already been approved(the SSA told me I was approved when i called them). My only hold up is that my case sent for QA review. My attorney says they rarely overturn decisions at that point and gave me a preliminary congrats. Now I am worried that something will happen and I will be in that small percentage that has approval overturned. Just another thing I have to worry and wait about. The process takes between 30 and 60 days to complete. I want to be super excited that I was approved, but yet I still have to wait a couple more weeks. Social Security told me I should know something in mid January. I guess I am just trying to say don't get discouraged by all the horror stories of having to wait 2 or 3 years to get benefits. Thats not always the case.
