Re: what does obgyn nurse do

First, most hospitals require a RN license to work on the Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartem (LDRP) unit. Over the past 10 years, I have seen many LVN/LPNs have to take tech positions on these units. That being said, here are the things OB/GYN nurses do:

    Hospital Nursing
    1) LDRP Nursing
    • Assess women coming into the hospital in possible labor
    • Perform stress tests on women who are over-due or who are high-risk
    • Monitor women in labor
    • Cervical dilation checks on laboring women
    • Induce labor in women via IV meds and/or vaginal meds
    • Monitor fetal heartbeat and contractions
    • Attempt to stop pre-term labor
    • Help the woman push when completely dilated
    • Pain control
    • The nurse is the eyes and ears for the doctor until the doc arrives to deliver the baby
    • Occasionally, a baby comes so fast that the nurse actually delivers the baby
    • Initial newborn assessment, cleaning of the newborn, giving eye drops and vitamin K shot to the newborn
    • After delivery, making sure the uterus clamps down to stop bleeding
    • Post-delivery pain control
    • Parental Education post-delivery
    • Breastfeeding education
    • Scrub in on c-sections

    2) GYN Nursing
    • Many hospitals have a GYN unit separate from the LDRP unit
    • Care of hysterectomy patients
    • Care of mother who have miscarried or had a stillborn birth. These mothers generally don't like to be on the LDRP unit because they can hear the other babies
    • Care of GYN cancers
    • Care of most GYN/fermal urology surgical patients

    3) Antepartum Nursing
    • Care of women with high-risk pregnancies
    • Monitoring women on hospital bedrest due to pregnancy issues
    • High-risk pregancies include:
      1. Multiples
      2. High blood pressure
      3. Pre-term labor
      4. Diabetes
      5. Placenta previa

    Outside of the Hospital Nursing
    1)OB/GYN Clinic
    • Telephone triage/questions/med refills
    • Prepare patients to see the doctor
    • Teaching
    • Helping doctor with pelvic exams
    • Scheduling surgeries and inductions

    2)GYN Oncology
    • Prepare patients to see doctor
    • Teaching
    • Chemo delivery
    • Telephone triage/questions/med refills

There are many other things you can do...these are just some examples. Hope this helps!!!

Re: what does obgyn nurse do

Thank you so much for the info... so the nurse that takes care of the baby after delivery is done in the hospital nursery or in the mother's room is the postpartum nurse? or is it the same nurse as labor and delivery?

Re: what does obgyn nurse do

Usually, the nurse that takes care of the baby is different from the labor and delivery nurse. Most hospitals have healthy babies room-in with the mother...and both mother and baby are taken care of by a post-partum nurse. Some hospitals still use a nursery (all do for sick infants)...and a neonatal nurse takes care of these babies.
