Lightbulb I'm always tired! WHY? Caffine..something to help me?

Sorry if there is a better board to ask my question, but here I go..

Basically, I'm always tired and I get enough sleep and I am pretty healthy.

First, I have never been a morning person..I'm a 22 yr old female who just graduated from college and I'm working an 8-2:30 job and after my job I help with soccer or go to another work for a couple hours.

I go to bed from 7:30-10:30pm and I get up at 6:45iamsh. So I DO get 8, 9, 10 hours of sleep...it doesn't matter how much I get - I wake up tired, am tired at work, after work and at night.

I eat pretty healthy, I try to do something active a couple times a week (don't have time) I am/was a soccer athlete so I'm pretty healthy that way. Like I said before, I've never been a morning person and just can't get up early but with me getting enough sleep and everything else fine there has to be something wrong or that I can do...

So here are my 2 questions: What are possible reasons I always feel tired? And is there something I can eat or drink that has caffine or some energy something in it? I would drink pop but I don't drink it cus it's unhealthy and I don't drink coffee.

    Please help

    Any responses?

I'm really thinking about drinking a pop a day or trying to like coffee...

    HI,
Have a few questions to ask you? Are you craving anything like ice cubes or high potency smells like lysol, nail polish remover hair spray, etc, dirt? How is your menstral flow? Is it really heavy? I know these questions sound wierd but there is a reason why I am asking them. My daughter had the same problem, she was tired, exhausted 24/7.

There are many things that could cause such tiredness. Low iron, low thyroid, and sleep disorders come immediately to mind, but of course thee are lots of others. Blood tests can look for low iron and low thyroid. There are interesting posts regarding sleep apnea in the Sleep Disorders Board. Check out posts by ******** regarding sleep problems.

Caffeine might give you a bit of energy for a short time (a few hours), but then you will find that you have to continually consume it, and then you will be come addicted and have terrible headaches when you skip a day. Caffeine is wonderful stuff (I have 2 large strong mugs of tea per day and I'm definitely addicted ) but taking caffeine will not do anything towards finding out the underlying cause of your tiredness.

I hope you are able to track down what the problem is.

I'm the same way, and my doctors just found out that I am anemic. My boyfriend used to tease me about not being a morning person, because it is nearly impossible for me to drag myself out of bed in the morning, but it honestly is a huge struggle. Even after I am up, I feel exhausted all day, no matter what.

I would ask your doctor to do blood tests that could identify a problem. It could be something as simple as an iron deficiency, or could be something more serious. Better to find out.

*Note: if you ARE anemic, I would just take an iron supplement every morning and every night. You'd be surprised at the difference.

You are too young to feel that way so it is time for a complete physical exam with some blood work ...at the very least you need some blood work to be sure you don't have something going on. It can be any number of things that would require some medication to clear up. You have a healthy lifestyle so don't mess it up by drinking pop or coffee. Coffee actually puts me to sleep so it doesn't always do what you might think it does. take care

I have always liked chewing ice lol, but not the other smells or anything...what would that mean though? - interesting.

I did have trouble sleeping, kept waking up and just didn't feel like i slept good the next day. But I have been wearing ear plugs and it has seemed to help -- even if I only wake up a couple times during the night could I still have a sleeping disorder?

I think I will make an appointment sometime soon to check the iron and blood things.

Thanks and I will post again if I have anymore questions or I find out anything. Thanks again.

    qwerty3,

I am glad that you are going to see a doctor to see if you can find out why you are so tired. Yes, please keep us posted.

Sleep problems are sometimes not obvious. There could be just enough disturbance in your breathing during the night that you never manage to get into the deep stages of sleep. Thus your sleep is not really refreshing you. (Of course this is just speculation -- you'd have to check this out with a sleep specialist to see if you actually do have sleep problems.)

Let us know when you get some feedback from a doctor. We can all learn from each other.

I agree that you should get some basic labwork done to to rule at anemia, hypothyroid, etc.

After that, try going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning. They say we do better on 90 minute sleep cycles, so
7.5 hours of sleep is more fulfulling than 8.

Be sure you stay well-hydrated and are eating plenty of healthy foods, high fiber, not a lot of sugar.

But what has honestly helped me more than anything is a more regular sleep pattern and drinking caffeine. Some days, I feel okay, and don't drink any. On days I feel a bit tired, a cup of black tea in the morning. And on days I am just dragging, a cup of coffee. This is not necessarily the healthiest advice, though, sorry.

Definitely! I would highly recommend doing some serious reading on sleeping disorders, specifically sleep apnea.

Sometimes a lack of iron may cause a sleeping disorder...as far as I know, this iron deficiency doesn't show up in lab tests...scientists became aware of this when autopsying the brains of people with certain sleep disorders...some of the people they autopsied had an iron deficiency in a certain area of the brain...

Sleep doctors will sometimes prescribe over the counter iron tablets to see if there is a change in the quality of one's sleep.
