    Ringing after Stapedectomy

I had a Stapedectomy on my right ear on April 17, 2014. Everything with the surgery went well, however since the surgery I am experiencing high-pitched ringing. Before the surgery, the ringing was different, almost low-pitched. I also feel like their is fluid in my middle ear. I had the packing removed and a few days ago thinking that all this ringing would subside. I was wrong. Does anyone have advice for me as to when this ringing will stop?

I'm in the same boat, had mine on the 15th. It is unbearable. I did 2 rounds of steroids which definitely helped but after completing the second round, my doctor said he did not want to remain on them. Like clockwork, once the pack was completed, the buzzing picked up. Seems to get worse in loud settings and with stress. Not sure if it will pass but hope so for us both.

I am so glad to hear you say that about the ringing getting louder when exposed to louder noises and stress. I feel the same, so maybe this is just steps to the ear healing.

    Hi Wendy,

I had a follow up visit today with my doctor who basically said that if things don't improve in 4 weeks, I should consider a hearing aid. This will help correct my hearing which sadly has not improved since the surgery but may mask some of the buzzing. Hoping that I will improve in the next 4 weeks. Any new news on your end? Hoping only good news!

I went to my follow up and my hearing has improved, however the high pitched ringing is still there. My doctor thinks it will dissapate in time. I am hopeful! It has been 6 weeks, and he said sometimes it takes 12 weeks. Also, he told me to wear earplugs to allow my ears to heal. Your hearing did not improve? I'm sorry to hear that.

Happy to hear (no pun intended) that your hearing has improved. Six weeks out now and I can hesitantly saying the the buzzing has become much quieter in the last 2 days. I tried taking zinc and B12 supplements starting 4 days ago based on research I did. Don't know if it was time or the supplements that have helped but I'm hoping this trend continues. I'm seeing a new doctor this week and perhaps he'll have insight. The one other symptom that I find unusual is this sound of bouncing in my ear when I walk. It almost sound like a basketball on a wood floor. Maybe time will make this all better or at the very least, we will simply become accustomed. Wishing you progress.

Do you ever feel like your ear is "clogged up?" I feel like there is fluid in there or something. I am feeling like there are times when the ringing or buzzing is less, and then sometimes worse. I guess this could be a good sign? I am going to a big concert this coming Saturday and I am worried it might make matters worse. I will for sure wear my ear plugs! Hope your doctor's visit goes well!

So funny Wendy (by the way I am Anne) - when I read your reply, I actually thought it was my own post. I definitely feel the same way about the ear being clogged with fluid. Tried a new specialist yesterday who did not notice any fluid. Sadly, what he thinks happened when I had my first surgery was that my inner ear suffered nerve damage since my word recognition is now at 42% (from 100 % prior to surgery). He put me on a double dose of steroids in the hopes that it will help the nerve heal. I don't think this explains the clogged feeling though. I definitely have the same feeling of some days being quieter then others. I am at my best outdoors if only I didn't have a desk job. I went to my children's concert last week and it wasn't that bad (not accounting for the music). Hearing people around me speaking was near to impossible but the music drowned out the loud buzzing. I hope the same for you. I did not have any remarkable change in the buzzing after the concert. Hope you enjoy it and am happy to have someone to share this mystery with.
    Best to you - Anne
