Lightbulb Hearing Aids and Dental Work: Lesson Learned

I recently had some dental work done on my back molars. I didn't think anything about keeping my hearing aids on. Unfortunately, the work being done was on the side that has the volume on the hearing aid set quite loudly as a default. I did fine at first, but one of the laser tools he used impacted my hearing so badly I almost had a panic attack. It was making it's noise rapidly and I was hearing it normally, echoing through the hearing aids and a third time through my bone. I've never experienced anything like it. My brain couldn't process things fast enough and I was close to freaking out. I had to have him stop mid-treatment to take the hearing aids out.

Lesson learned: don't wear the hearing aids while having invasive dental work done.

2nd lesson learned (at next appointment a week later): without the hearing aids, with the dentist's face covered with a respirator, it makes it impossible to understand anything of what they were saying.

Thankfully, I've needed very little invasive dental work over the years.

After 4 years of orthodontic treatment, I thought I'd figured out the communication behind the mask thing, but I had my hearing aids in at the time. Just another of those life lessons I've learned I need to address if I'm ever in that situation again.
