Mitral regurgitation - am I at risk with COVID-19?

    Hello,
I have mild-moderate mitral regurgitation (see enclosed description). I am 53yo, the situation is non-rheumatic, stable (due to a slender valve shape), my situation is stable I am otherwise healthy and fit.

I read online that "Patients who have heart valve abnormalities that are well compensated and well-tolerated at baseline, are more susceptible to heart failure if they were to become infected with coronavirus. Because of the underlying heart valve issues, if damage to the pumping chamber of the heart were to occur, patients would be less able to tolerate that."

Am I at greater risk of developing severe illness should I be infected? (Should I take greater than usual precautions so as not to get infected?)

I would really appreciate any answer you could provide.
    Thank you,
    Andy

In a word - YES! Anyone with heart, lung or other chronic health conditions should be extra vigilant.

I'm 75 and I've got heart failure, since 1987, with a massively enlarged upper heart (atria) and four leaky valves. I haven't changed my shopping routine, to the grocery store, or to a building supplies store, but I do wash my hands after coming home, and gargle with 3% hydrogen peroxide when I come home, and at other times, plus other hygienic actions.

I have a doctor appointment checkup coming up and I hope to have a "Virtual Visit" rather than going into the hospital to have the checkup.

Am I worried or concerned? Of course, but so far, by being very careful, I have avoided the China Coronavirus.

Yes, you are..take extra precautions. What you are doing is fine...but eliminate going to the stores as much as possible and do not interact with anyone outside if you can help it.. make sure anyone coming around you also takes the same precautions.
