Is this heart related? Please Help.

Yesterday morning I was woken up by a pain in the middle of my chest that felt like it started at the diaphragm area it also hurt in the middle of my back, between the shoulder blades but, the pain was gone within 10minutes and I gave it some thought but just assimilated it into the multitude of problems I seem to be having over the past month.

I was woken today by the same pain in the middle of the night. This time, the pain is alot more intense. It seems to start up at the chest and then the main part of the pain zaps the middle of my back, like a stabbing pain. This time the pain hasn't gone away it has been on and off for 4hrs.30minutes now and it is also there when I stand up which, it hasnt been before. The area affected seems to also affect the left shoulder blade now and also the left side of my chest. It always starts in the middle of my chest/diaphragm and then spreads. For example it will start up and then spread to my back and then seems to spread again to my left side (wherever it wants back or front) then it goes away again.

I'm having no specific chest pains, no breathing problems but, I am starting to get anxious now because the pain is intesifying and as I first thought it could be heartburn (I've never experienced heartburn so I'm taking a guess here) I'm now concerned it is something else. I don't even know if it is possible to have heartburn in your back

I'm so concrened by this that I am going to have to go see the doctor I don't trust or have confidence in because if it is something serious I would hope he can detect it from the symptoms. I'm not having any arm or shoulder pains directly related to this pain either. I've tried to be as thorough as I can and also not jump to conclusions but, I am running out of ideas and feel it is time to post up because my conclusions (in a totally foriegn field to me) could be way off.

I ate two large meals on Sunday that although in themselves were not huge, were large in comparison to what I have been eating. That is why I myself concluded it is heartburn but, could it be anything else? I've had 2 EKG's in the past 2months and both came back fine as did my blood work but, I have had elvated BP of late due to worry, panic and anxiety. I'm 27 and overweight a non-smoker and don't drink - i haven't even toched a carbonated drink since August.

Thanks for your time and feedback.

Scout.

Re: Is this heart related? Please Help.

Sorry, I failed to mention I am having a LOT of pain in my left side at the bottom of my ribcage. I've been told that it may be a hilitial hernia but, I don't know what a hernia feels like and haven't found anywhere with a description of the pain you feel if you have one. Could the two things be related?

Re: Is this heart related? Please Help.

More than likey at your age, it's GERD related. Even if you're not at an ideal weight, the likeyhood of you having angina at your age is very very slim. Anxiety can certaintly makes it worse. I really wouldn't be concerned. Talk to your doctor about indigestion and possibly getting a prescription of Nexium or Aciphex. Eat slower and eat smaller amounts combined with the medicaton and you're pain will more than likely go away. When you drop weight, these sensations tend to also go away as well.

Hi Scout --

I've got a lot of years on you (55 year old female) but can somewhat relate to your complaints.

On another thread I talked about awakening with strange pain in my left chest area and below the breast, it felt like the pain was inside the lowest left-sided ribs.

It didn't last long and I was ready to get out of bed anyway, but I rubbed the areas and it disappeared. That was last week. I went nuts over it, and went to the cardiologist, who was unconcerned. I had an echocardiogram two years ago after center-chest burning and heaviness but nothing was revealed. I had, in a panic, gone to the emergency room with the burning sensation -- it went through to my upper back so I was SURE it was cardiac. No problems from the ER tests, either.

Anyhow, this time the cardiologist said my left-sided brief pain didn't sound like cardiac in origin to him at all. I must tell you I had my gall bladder out 5 months ago and have been warned that all sorts of pains all over the stomach and chest can be felt for many months, if not longer. But gall bladder is on the right side, not left, and so I was surprised to be awakened by this pain.

I would say I, too, seriously doubt you have heart problems. Most likely it IS "GERD" or some such problem, like esophageal spasm. So many pains mimic heart pain that it's very difficult to pin it down. I am amazed that with all the crazy problems we all have that we are still alive to report them!

Seriously, please don't worry so much. Worry makes EVERYTHING worse, trust me. I've been on low dose Xanax for several years for anxiety but am convinced I am not taking enough of it. If you absolutely feel you want more doctoring, find a good internist and tell him/her your complaints. If they don't feel they can handle it, trust me, they will refer you to a cardiologist.

Your problems sound like they are digestive in nature, or musculosketal with that left-sided stuff, and everything is made worse from worry. It's like you just keep waiting for the next pain, right? It's always in the back of your mind, if you're like me. Once hit with something disturbing, a whole lot of us wait for the next incident. We need to RELAX!

Smile Re: Is this heart related? Please Help.

Thank you both for your replies I very much appreciate it. Upon waking up this morning I had no pain in the centre of my chest and I do now believe it is digestion related. I only drank liquids yesterday and I will do so for most of today and hope that pain does not return. I went to my GP and he believes I have problems with my gallbladder and has reffered me to a specialist.

It is so confusing when you start to get aches and pains in places you have never had them before especially when you've had high blood pressure of late. I don't know if they are interelated but it sure feels that way.

Dave440, yes you're right about the eating slower, I'll have to learn to chew and chew and chew My meal on Sunday was larger then usual and I did wolf it down somewhat, bad habit - never suffered a consequence from it though - i'll have to retrain myself on.

Carol, you're spot on when you say once one problem starts it feels like a tidal wave and of late I do kind of just expect something or other to go wrong the next day and the next... I do believe I am stressed at the moment especially with a GP who is determined to put me on meds for life despite my protestations . I am not well versed in any type of internal problems (like the heart) so when I feel something twitch in that area or on the left side I am prone to worry about it of late where, previously I would probably see it as 'just a bicep strain' or 'just a sore neck' now I always think the worst which is quite foriegn to my general make up which probably enhances my fear of what is happening.

Once again thanks for replying I do appreciate people taking time out to explain thing to me. It's very hard to get info on the net, most sites just tell the effect and don't tell you much about cause which, is why I find myself here quite regularly of late.

Re: Is this heart related? Please Help.

Hello again, Scout --

Glad our responses made you feel a bit better! If you do see the specialist about your gall bladder and possible problems with it, bear in mind that even having it out, which is a good idea if it is truly diseased, will likely not cure all your complaints.

The truth is that most people still have various digestive-related complaints even after the surgery, so while it's important to get the GB out, more problems can crop up or old ones continue.

Yes, anxiety and stress play a huge part in how we feel and how we adapt to our circumstances. Nearly everyone I work with, young and older, is having lots of problems health-wise now. They're all different, but troubling.
Today's fast-paced crazy world doesn't help any of us, that's for sure. Many people find they don't suffer anywhere near as much when they are on vacation. Interesting, isn't it?

We're here for you when you need us -- most of us check in frequently --
