Legs Swelling after Bypass Surgery

I had surgery last September, triple bypass. Lately, probably the past two to three months my legs have been swelling. Seems to be getting worse. The left leg swells more than the right. I saw doctor today and asked him, he indicated it was because the veins that were taken out of both legs. Does this sound reasonable to any of you?

Re: Legs Swelling after Bypass Surgery

my dad has just recently had triple bypass (4 weeks ago) he had major swelling of the lower legs, vein from only one leg tho, he has been on frusemide (sp) deuretic, and wearing those white socks, they have jst recently nearly back to normal, the leg with the vein removed is still puffed bit more than the other, so i would ? why if after they had returned to normal, they have swelled again, do u rest your legs up enough....

Re: Legs Swelling after Bypass Surgery

It seems possible but not the total answer. It could also be caused by a weakened heart pumping poorly (similar to hart failure) or to a screw up in harvesting the leg veins. Also if they took out a GOOD one that was pulling more than its weight and left occluded vessels to do the job, that could result in venous insufficiency and edema.

So either the doctor screwed up or not...and you will never know the truth.

My friend had a quadruple and the swelling was gone after 2 weeks...leg sore for months afterward though.

Leg swelling worsens in hot weather, so that might be a factor. Perhaps a diuretic might be a good idea...and the horrid elastic stockings <such FUN in humid 90 degree heat.>

Re: Legs Swelling after Bypass Surgery

I appreciate your help. I am going to get another opinion from the doctor who did the heart bypass. Seems funny that it would show up so many months later. I still have pair of those "cute" stockin's....might have to get them out!
Thanks again.
