    Question "Leaky valve" questions

Hello - I have questions about leaky valves in the heart. If someone has a "leaky valve" is it actually called "heart failure?" Can someone with a leaky heart valve have surgery for another problem? What are the symptoms of having a "leaky valve?" Thank you! Sister

    Re: "Leaky valve" questions

    Hi Sister,

A "leaky" valve is not hf, but if severe could cause hf. Heart failure is a condition when the heart cannot supply enough blood/oxygen to meet demand. For a valve to cause hf, it could happen when a large supply of the blood is not pumped into circulation, but leaks (regurgitation) back into the left atrium (mitral valve).

If one has a valve problem, antibiotics should be taken prior to dental work or surgery to prevent possible infection with the valve.

Usually there is no symptoms until hf, but there could be shortness of breath, chest pain and fatique.
