    slow heart pounding

Just wondering if this is normal, sometimes when I stand up fast I feel my heart pound and beating real slow. My usual resting heartbeat is at about 70-85, but when this happens it drops to the low 60 and sometimes a slight dizzy spell. I've had 3 ekg, 2 chest x-rays and blood work done. All normal. Is this a heart disorder or something else.

    Re: slow heart pounding

Hi Dart, I can't believe I'm anwering this late at night.....way past my bedtime. My husband saw our cardiologist this afternoon. He woke up Monday morning around 4:30 a.m. with a sense of fullness in his upper chest and was feeling lightheaded, his pulse was in the 40's and lasted 1 1/2 hours before coming back up. He's also noticed that in the evening after being tired from working all day, his pulse falls below 60 bpm. Our dr. as ordered a King of Hearts Recorder, he will wear this for a month and will push the button on the recorder when he's experiencing these episodes. He noticed his heart would beat the normal lub dub and then a long pause before the next beat. Dr. said it was prob a PVC (premature ventricular contraction) which is totally benign and harmless, but we are trying to rule out weather his heart is pausing (bradycardia) or if there is indeed PVC's causing the low pulse. My husband has a history of Atrial Flutter and Atrial Fibrillation, and dr also wants to see if he's having these rhythm disturbances as well. In conclusion of saying all this,
you may want to see an Electrophysiologist/Cardiologist and see what is causing your slow pulse. If a recorder is ordered for you, they will explain how to use it, etc...
If you are having symptoms of lightheadedness, I strongly recommend getting it checked out. Penk

I think this is pretty normal - at least I get a similar thing. Pulse rate can vary quite a bit depending especially on how you feel and anxiety.
When you stand up suddenly the blood drains from your head and the dizziness results.
Medication, especially blood pressure, might cause it or be associated with it. Your resting heart rate is higher than mine - mine is in the 60's usually.
But I notice it can vary, from day to day.
My Cardio specialist said heart rate doesn't have a lot to do with blood pressure but I know when I am anxious both heart rate and BP go up together. (I think he means the resting pulse rate.)
My guess would be that when you stand up the blood drains momentarily from your head and gives temporary dizziness - then the heart pumps harder to compensate - hence the pounding.
