Unhappy Just Diagnosed And Really Scared

    Hi All

My name is Susie, I am 45 and just got diagnosed with Hep C two weeks ago, I am so scared. I cant beleive this, I really do not need this hep C. I have enough with me and my son, age 14 both having Graves Disease. For those of you who do not know what Graves Disease is, it is a thyroid disease also known as hyperthyroidism. We were just both diagnosed with the Graves in the past two years and on medication. I was in the hospital for a few days, well they ran some blood work and the next thing I know I have doctors and a social worker talking to me, well actually questioning me about my alcohol consumption?????? I told them I do not drink much, I go out and have one or two maybe 6 times a year, besides that I DO NOT drink that I have Graves Disease. They said that my SGOT and SGPT and the AlkPhos came back abnormally high, so they ran some additional tests and I found out I have Hep C. I was taking Lipitor for my Chlorestorol, but not no more, they took me off that right away. Just makes me mad, they should have tested me before putting me on lipitor, which suggest testing for liver problems before starting treatment. Well my doctor had me drink some barium and did some sort of scan. He said that my liver is not enlarged or inflammed and that my coloring is good. He said he wants me off the Lipitor and then in two more weeks I go for more blood work. He said he will see where my levels are then. He said that he is referring me to a liver specialist. I am just so scared!!!!! I have no idea how I got this. Well yes I experimented with drugs back in the late 1970's but I was never a IV drug user. I have no idea how long I have had this. I read that my son could have it, that they can contract it during birth??????? I am taking my son in this week to get him checked. Also my doctor mentioned I might have to have a biopsy. Is like a surgery?????? I am just so scared, I am a single mom, with a sick 14 year old boy that really needs me, I dont want to die. I read that some people do not respond to the treatment, I dont know that I could even have the treatment having graves disease. I am freaking out about this, is there anyone out there that has Hep C and Graves disease that can write me???? Anyone who can tell me what to expect????? Is a liver biospy major surgery???? How long are you in the hospital for that???????

Sorry this is so long, I really needed to get all this out though and I have tons of questions.

    Well take care all,

    Susie45

I know exactly how you feel & most all of us with this disease have been where you are now. You found a great site with great information.
Two & 1/2 years ago I posted here & was freaked out & just like you I was Blessed with a reply from Thanbey. She is a God send to the hep c community & spends an unbelieveable amount of effort to try & help us all. There are many people here that will gladly answer your questions but as Thanbey said you will likely live a long life. ? What geno type are you ?
What is your viral load ? If you don't know you should find out.
Get the hep A&B vaccines so not to risk catching A or B on top of the C.
I have not had a biopsy I just did the only alternative test that is as close to a biopsy as you can get with out actually having a biopsy it's called Fibrosure & is done with blood no needle inserted into your liver like with a biopsy.
There is risk with a biopsy but small but as I said I decided to use another method I will have the results Wednedsay June 30th. & will post them here when I know. READ, READ, & READ SOME MORE !
Learn all you can & know YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

    Hello!
I read your post, and i trully feel for you! i too have hep c, and was diagnosed when my son was only1 year old, and a single mom. i had my son tested when he was a little older, and he was fine. he didn't have it. the percentage is actually really low. one test will ease your worry. if it is any conselation, my mom had 6 kids, and i was the only one who got it, through contact with her blood as an infant, not through child birth. i wish you luck, and you sound so strong that i know you will get through everything!

Re: Just Diagnosed And Really Scared

    Nice to meet you Susie,

I was only diagnosed last October and still felt the fear from your post as my own feelings not to long ago...I am 49 female, what my GI and I could figure I have had it for over 30 years.

It is true that you will live a long time with this virus, it is a slow moving virus and if the Dr said your liver isn't enlarge is something that should ease your mine RIGHT NOW. My GI also told me the 1st time I saw him that my liver wasn't enlarged. I didn't realize it until I started to do my research on this virus.

I have 4 children and after my PCP told me that my children could have it too it just made me more stressed. I had my two youngest tested first and they were non reactive. My oldest son has always been a blood donor because of his blood type so I knew he was ok. My oldest daughter and I talked about all of the research regarding if she would have it and she decided to wait to test because she is in College and working part time. Later she will test when a better treatment comes on the market that is less harmful.

I do want to add that it is important to have a biopsy so you can truly know what condition your liver is in. Then make sure you get a copy of it. In fact get copies of all of your lab results. I even went and got the copies of my younger children’s non reactive results because to see it was to believe it.

Since I was diagnosed last October I have lowered my liver enzymes to normal range just with a liver friendly diet and a vitamin regiment. I have also lessened the stress in my life; stress is harmful to your liver. I am lucky because my biopsy is between grade 1-2 & stage 1-2 so I can wait to see if all the lifestyle changes are making a difference.

    Judi

Hi Thankbey, downsletmedown, Judi, and Triplet

I want to thank you for your replies. Yeah I was just really upset finding out about all of this, I will read up on the disease and follow my doctors orders. I go soon to have the blood work done and see my doctor again in July. I am having my son tested on the 13th. I just pray my son does not have the hep C, but from what I have already read it is like a 4-5% chance.

I do not know yet what geno type or viral load. I know my doctor gave me the orders to have my blood drawn and checked off lots of different tests and he is also doing a urinalysis.

Judy you mentioned a liver friendly diet????? Are there certain foods that we should avoid???? well besides alcohol. What is a liver friendly diet??????? I do eat healthy and take vitamins, but please let me know if there is a liver friendly diet or if there are foods I should be avoiding.

Thank you for reminding me I wanted to ask my doctor about getting the immunizations for hep A & B.

    Everyone take care,

    Talk to you later.

Hi Thanbey, Judi, Doctorsletmedown, and Triple

Thank you for responding to my post, yeah, I was really upset. I have done some reading and this is still horrible. I do not know what geno type yet, I go in nextweek and have some blood drawn for various tests, and they are also doing a urinalysis. I will be keeping my fingers and toes and ... crossed hoping the SGOP SGPT and the AlkPhos are down. I have been off the Lipitor now for 4 weeks, so hopefully it helping. I do eat good healthy meals, and no I have not had any alcohol. I did read that aspirin is not good to take with liver disease. I do have a question, Judi you mentioned a liver healthy diet???? are there foods we should be avoiding, what is a liver healthy diet???????

    Well you all take care,

    Talk to you soon

    Hi Thanbey, doctorsletmedown, triplet,and Judi

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I actually did post the other night but must have missed a step it was not on here when I came back in today.

I want to thank all of you for responding to my post. Yeah, I was quite upset when I wrote that. I am calmer now and have done some reading on HepC.
I go to have my blood drawn and a urinalysis done next week. I have been off the Lipitor, so hopefully my levels look better. I will be keeping my finger, toes, ... crossed.

I have not found out as of yet what geno type, but Judi you mentioned something I found interesting and have not read about, you wrote about a liver healthy diet????? Are there foods we should be avoiding???? what is a liver healthy diet????? I can say that I do eat a healthy diet and of course NO alcohol, but yeah vitamins may be something I want to start taking. I do occasionally take one of my sons chewables, ha ha I think I will ask the doctor about a good multivitamin like centrum instead.

Well you all take care, hope to hear from you soon.

    I will write back soon.

    Hi Whisper,

Did you clear the virus? How long ago did you finish treatment and would you mind telling us what your viral load was when you began treatment?

    Thanks,

    A fellow genotype 1 )0;
