New to Board - Have HepC and High Liver Functions

I was diagnosed with HepC about 5 years ago, I went to a specialist who diagnosed me with Genotype 1. I was laid off from my job shortly after that and was without medical insurance for over a year and a half. I am now working, have good insurance and just found out from a different doctor that my liver functions are extremely high - ALT = 198 and AST = 249. She has referred me to a liver doctor who I see a week from today, she is also recommending that I have a liver biopsy. I am scared to death.

I recently purchased a new house in July and have to work in order to keep my house. I'm afraid of going on the medication because of the side effects and fear that I will not be able to work. Other than a little fatigue, I have no other symptoms, at least I don't think I do.

I would like to bring my liver functions down in order to wait until a better treatment is approved by the FDA. I know of quite a few people who were not able to complete treatment or did complete treatment only to not have the virus clear. I do not want to go through a year of torture only to still have the HepC virus in my system.

I'd like to hear from anyone who went through treatment and was able to work, how did you deal with this, was if bad? Also, if there is anyone who is trying natural remedies, I'd love to hear from you too.

I feel so alone in all this, it's nice to have a place to come where other's are going through the same thing.

Thank you for you kind attention.

Re: New to Board - Have HepC and High Liver Functions

I found out a year ago I had hep c during a routine physical. Type 1, stage 3 fibrosis. I started trearment March 2nd, forty weeks later here I am. I've missed only a day or two of work because of feeling bad. I've had to take off early every 4 weeks for doctors appointments. The virus has been undetectable since week 12. It has been no fun, weekends are mostly, lost, but it has been tolerable. I am well aware I've been very lucky in my response to the tx. Eight more weeks for me. I hope and expect to be virus free for life. If the hep c is going to come back, it usually does so in within the first 3 to 6 months following tx. Good luck in whatever course of action you choose.

Congratulations Owen and thank you for replying, I really appreciate it. It must be a great feeling knowing that your almost at the end of the journey and it looks like it's paying off for you.

I'm glad to hear that you were able to work, I don't really have a choice, I have to work or I'll loose my home. I worry about being able to work and loosing my hair. I will find out soon enough how bad my liver is, I see my doctor on the 11th, next Tuesday and we'll go on from there.

Re: New to Board - Have HepC and High Liver Functions

    Hi Linda and Owen.......
I am also new to this board and Linda are stories r very similiar......I was diagnosed with Hep C about 6 years ago.......I contracted it through iv drug use, i am now 3 yrs, 7 months clean. Thank God !! had a biopsy back in 2002 which showed no signs of liver damage. yesterday's test results showed that still my regular liver enzymes are about normal but my viral load is 11 million....I am not really sure what all of this means. My doctor did state to me that the higher my load becomes the harder it will be for treatment to be effective. Like you Linda I am unable to do treatment at this time. I am a waitress who works 40+ hours a week. I am on my feet constantly. without my pay, i would also lose my house and not be able to support my family, which now includes my beautiful new grandson. I have been scheduled for another new biopsy in february. I guess i am hear just to hear others stories and leanr how other have dealt wiht thier disease. I am symptom free, although tired at times, but being 47 years old and waitressing over 40 hours a week, so being tired is not so unusual.
I guess if any question at all I have is I am wondering if 11 million is an excessive high viral load. Also does this number have any correlation to the damage done to the liver ??
thanks so much for listening to me.
    Teri

Re: New to Board - Have HepC and High Liver Functions

Hi Linda-I'm new here too. I finished my treatment this august. I worked thru most of it. I did take 5 mos. off, but I managed to keep my house and horse. Lost my car, tho. Oh well........and I did lose my mind a little . kMy job consisted of lifting close to 6,000 lbs a night. One of the side affects that I got was being tired and weak, so that's why i stopped working. 3 weeks after being off meds, I felt better than ever!!!!!!!!!!!

Give it a try- everybody reacts differently. The treament didn't work for me this time, but I'm am going to do a clinical trial this spring-I have an appt. with my dr. Jan 9th to find out what it's all about. I have 1a genotype and am stage 3. I am an old broad (50's) and I want to be an even older broad. So take a chance-if it gets soooooo bad, you can always stop. and there are lots of drugs that counteract almost all of the side affects, so don't worry.
