Question Has anyone out there with a Hiatal Hernia had the Stretta Procedure?

Hi. This is my first post. I've been logging on and reading Health Boards since Dec. '03. I'm a 52 yr old male. In Nov. '03, I got food caught in my esophsgus which eventually lead to a trip to the Emergency Room, which lead to an upper endoscopy and diagnosis of a stricture of the esophagus and a Hiatal Hernia. Before leaving the hospital, I was given a prescription for Prevacid to take daily for the rest of my life. I also had an appointment to have another upper endoscopy in two weeks to expand the esophageal stricture. The second upper endoscopy was successful in expanding the stricture. The Prevacid seemed to be the only lifestyle change I needed to keep my Hiatal Hernia and GERD symptoms under control until May of this year when I develloped an incredibly raw esophagus. Anything and everything I ate felt like I was swallowing HOT ROCKS. More lifestyle changes....I had to start sleeping on an incline and watching what I ate. Goodbye Mexican food, Italian food, tomatoes, peppers, etc. This also forced me to start doing more research including HealthBoards. I learned about Chelated Magnesium here at HealthBoards and made that part of my daily routine. The magnesium and the inclined sleeping plane have my symptoms under control again. thank God. Continued research lead me to a non-invasive medical procedure called the Stretta Procedure. In performing this procedure, the GI specialist inserts a device through the mouth into the esophagus very much like the endoscope. It is inserted down to the lower esophageal spincter (LES). At that point, a balloon is inflated to expand the LES. A series of electrodes then come in contact with the LES. RF energy is then applied to burn the LES tissue resulting in scar tissue forming. This is repeated until the whole length of the LES has been treated. The scar tissue that forms causes the LES to constrict tighter, thereby no longer allowing GERD to affect the esophagus. Sorry about the lengthy explanation preceding my question. My questions, then, has anyone had their Hiatal Hernia treated with this realtively new Stretta Procedure? If so, how long ago? How effective has it been for you at relieving your GERD symptoms? Would you reccommend the Stretta Procedure to other people living with Hiatal Hernias? Have you been able to give up your lifetime prescription for a proton pump inhibitor? Do you still need to sleep on an incline? What other thoughts would you like to share with someone who is contemplating having the Stretta Procedure done?

Hi there. I have heard of the procedure but don't know personally of anyone who has had it done. I'm replying because you mentioned that they told you that you would have to take Prevacid the rest of your life. I just posted a note today called Nexium/Prilosec Alert! so you might want to read it. I have a theory about taking these drugs over the long term.
I also read an article on the net today about fresh garlic and how it can help GERD. I'm going to try it, but it has to be fresh and you press it, tablets/capsules don't work.
So did you decide to have the procedure done? Let me know how it goes because I'm considering it.
    Thanks,
    jitterbug
