This is a tough question since both are good.

Tramadol might be better for nerve pain, while Vicodin may be better for muscle and bone pain. They work well together too.

The tramadol is a mild narcotic and also provides both serotonin and norepinephrin reuptake inhibition. In other words, it also acts kinda like an anti-depressant, which can be very helpful with nerve pain.

If you are already on an SSRI for depression or anxiety then tramadol may not be best, as it can work together with the SSRI to increase your chances for seizure or serotonin syndrome.

I would go with tramadol first. If that's not quite good enough, and your doc is willing, add Vicodin.

    Best of Luck!

    Tramadol is nothing like tylenol.

Tramadol is an opioid, a narcotic, that also employs reuptake inhibition of both serotonin and norepinephrine. These are properties that can work well with nerve pain, in similar fashion to how antidepressants help with nerve pain. The withdrawals from tramadol are terrible, just look at a new post entitled something like "don't take tramadol."

But, you could be right about vicodin being best. That's why I wrote in post two that it's a tough question - as both are good drugs.

    Good reply Steve.
Anyone that says that there are no withdrawals from Tramadol have obviously never taken it before. I would say trying to get off of the vioden would be easier than trying to get off the tramadol. But everyone is different. Steve is right in that tramadol is basically a narcotic + antidepresant in one which makes in an effective pain reliever but very difficult to stop taking. It's your choice but try taking the vicoden first, then you could always add the tramadol in with it later. But go with what your doctor suggest.
