Physical Evaluation For A Herniated Disk

Does anyone know why a doctor does all these kinds of physical tests when you have a herniated disk ? I heard him talk about straight leg raise (SLR) and some other things. He made me push my leg into his hand, also he made me push my toe towards him as hard as I could and some other things also. Anyone here know why he does that ? Also, what does each physical test on certain parts of the body have anything to do with a disk herniation ?

Keep in touch..

Re: Physical Evaluation For A Herniated Disk

Hi Joseph: The reason doctors do those tests on your legs is that they are checking for nerve damage. Also, the straight leg raise shows that your sciatic nerve is getting affected by your disk problem. (I really hate it when physical therapists do that to my left leg, as I always end up in pain; I tell them my sciatic nerve is affected, but they seem to have to do it any way). Your sciatic nerve runs from your lumbar area down your legs. You know, Joseph, when doctors do these things, just ask them why. I come into my doctor's offices with tons of questions. I always ask them to let me see my xrays and I tell them, this is where I learn so much. The doctors are always willing to answer my questions. The doctors are also checking your leg strength.

I am going for my L4-5 epidural shot this morning, so I probably won't be visiting here for a few days. The shots can wipe me out. The reason for this shot is to take the inflammation down in my lumbar area. The shots work really well for me in my low back. Take care, Joseph, PatG

Re: Physical Evaluation For A Herniated Disk

That's a good idea PatG, thanks for the post! I understand how the injections can wipe you out for a while. When I had them done I was out of it for most of the day, usually because of the versed and the pain in my back after the anesthisia wore off. Anyway, keep us posted on your progress!
