"Difficulty Breathing"...
I have been diagnosed with a Hiatal Hernia, AR/GERD. I was prescribed NEXIUM but have not started it yet.
I have had symptoms of GAS/BLOATING/NAUSEA/BELCHING and a feeling like my food is coming back up my Oesophagus. Up until two days ago I was able to get by on GAVISCON and eating lightly and ALOE VERA juice.
Its strange but I don't get a feeling of Acid coming up to my throat. I do get the lump in the throat.
This is my symptom these past two days, difficulty breathing, feels like an Elephant on my chest.
I would like to know if others have this shortness of breath and if you take PPIs did it help with that.
Thanks in advance,

Re: "Difficulty Breathing"...
Solofelix - I think we've talked before on the AR/GERD board....anyway....I too have a large hiatal hernia and have shortness of breath. Some days are better than others, but I do have it. I have a very low exercise intolerance also. I try to eat very small meals several times a day now so that I don't get so short of breath after I eat. I have been on PPI's for 4 years, so they aren't really helping the shortness of breath. My GI doc says that it is a symptom of GERD/HH and one that I may have to live with.

Re: "Difficulty Breathing"...
I get that a lot. The current theory is that I have allergic asthma and reflux-induced breathing problems, and they tend to aggravate each other.

PPIs did help at a high dosage (3 Prilosec per day.) I opted not to stay at that dose.

Re: "Difficulty Breathing"...
My doc hasn't put much emphasis on my shortness of breath or my back pain that I never had until I started with the hernia/AR. Because of both of these things, I have a low exercise intolerance which really upsets me because I love to walk, ride horses and work outside. before all of this, I could do a days hard work and feel great, now I can't do much. Does anyone else feel this way? It's not that I'm very tired, it's that I get short of breath and pain in my back, etc. especially after eating. It's hard to believe a 4 cm hernia and reflux can cause this much aggravation.
