Stabbing Pain after Inguinal Hernia Mesh Operation

    Hello All,

I had an inguinal hernia mesh surgery in early Nov2013. I am 39 years old and in good shape. The surgery went well and I was well on the road to recovery until I started working out and going back to hot yoga. Per doctor instructions, I didn't do any kind of workout for 1.5 months after the surgery. I had a sharp stabbing pain about 1.5 inches away from the incision near the base of my penis 3 days after the surgery that I noticed right after I took myself off the Norco (due to constipation). That stabbing pain went away in about 7 days but has now returned with a vengeance after I started working out and going back to yoga. It is random and strikes out of nowhere but seems to be caused when I twist my body a certain way or bend my body backwards. I have toned down on the yoga and have kept up the gym (which doesn't seem to bother it as much) but I am wondering is this going to be with me forever?!?!?! I went back to my surgeon and he thinks it is caused by one of stitches he put in near this area. So, some questions:

    * Has anyone else had this sharp stabbing pain 1.5 months after surgery?
    * If so, what did you do to fix it?
    * Are inguinal hernia mesh stitches usually dissolvable stitches?

I am a very active guy and am planning to thru hike the Pacific Crest Trail starting in April so I want to get this resolved ASAP.

    Thanks!

I am 4 years out of this surgery.

Yes, this isn't abnormal at all. You will have this for months after the surgery until the mesh is fully settle in your body. Whenever you twist or move in a way that you have not since getting the mesh, it sort of tweaks the mesh a bit.

However, after a few months to maybe half a year this becomes less of an issue. If the pain lasts a long time (hours/days) or you start seeing swelling you should probably have it checked out.

Re: Stabbing Pain after Inguinal Hernia Mesh Operation

    Hi,

I had surgery 8 months ago and still have occasional stabbing pain (5 on the pain scale) that usually only lasts for a few seconds. Can't associate it with any particular physical activity; it sometimes happens when I'm just lying down.

I have not been pain free since the surgery, but pain level is usually 2 and isn't noticeable unless I think about it.

    Best Regards.
