    Herpes blood test question

My Doctor has ordered a HSV titer with Igg and Igm for hsv blood test. What does that mean? Is he looking to see what type of herpes I have or just what the antibodies show? Will it just show the titers and just that I have the virus or will it also show what type? or does he have to ask for a test to show the type of hsv specifically?

skip the IgM and go for the 'type specific IgG"

    Re: Herpes blood test question

well what the dr ordered specifically is HSV titer with Iff and Igm. I just wondered if that is alone is going to tell me what type of Hsv I have or does he have to order specifically "Igg type specific?" OR DOES just writing on the order hsv with titers and Igg and Igm autamatically have them test for both 1 and 2? or should he have written the Igg type specific on the order?

    Re: Herpes blood test question

A "type specific IgG antibodies herpes blood test for both HSV1 and HSV2" will tell you 'specifically' which type you have. But not WHERE it is on your body. The Center for Disease control only recommends the IgG test for herpes diagnosis. The IgM test is a totally different test even though your doctor's order seems to blur them together as one. The IGM test is WORTHLESS and often gives a false positive. On this board is a poster named OVER21 who has made many posts regarding testing. READ THEM. It's a wealth of knowledge that anybody dealing with herpes SHOULD know. Doctors are not always up to snuff on this stuff so the patient has to be proactive. Anyway I would not pay for getting an IGM test and if you do, ignore the result. (Might as well just throw your copay out the window.) But hey, its YOUR money.

So, if My doctor did not write on the order "type specific' hsv titers then they will just test to see if I have the antibodies and not what type of hsv?
