I wonder why they would say that. Drinking water has no effect on cholesterol/lipid levels. You don't even need to fast if they're just screening for total cholesterol and HDL levels.

ZippyDawg -- Probably the reason for the fasting is that I always have glucose checked at the same time as the cholesterol breakdown test.

For that, only small amounts of water have been recommended.

Large amounts of water will dilute the blood plasma to a degree. This will lower the concentration of all plasma components, thus lowering apparent lipid components.
Same consideration must be given to large quantites of salt the day before. The body will dilute the salt with water to keep it's blood concentration in a narrow, safe range thus raising the plasma volume and lowering the lipid readings.
The only things that will be entirely trustworthy are the RATIOS.

    Re: Water during Fasting?

If you have normal kidney function drinking water while fasting will not have any measurable effect on cholesterol/lipid levels. In any case you would not want to be in dehydrated state for any blood work.

Just drink your normal amount of water unless you are specifically told by your lab or doctor to restrict water intake for some reason. This also applies to any prescription drugs you are taking. Again you should check with your doctor for specific instructions.

As for fasting blood glucose testing I've never been told not to drink water for any fasting blood test.

    Zippy Dawg:

I didn't say I was told NOT to drink water before a blood test for glucose. I was told to FAST, i.e, not consume food or other drinks. But no doctor, anywhere, has ever recommended to me that I drink more than small amounts of water before any blood test.

Are the above words not yours in response to my earlier post? I specifically indicated doctors have told me not to take more than a small amount of water prior to a blood glucose test. No one else on this thread has said a word about glucose testing other than me, so it appears you are responding to what I said.

    Whatever....

I was responding to Lenin's statement that "Large amounts of water will dilute the blood plasma to a degree." Any fasting blood test including a fasting plasma blood glucose is not going to be effected by drinking water. I stated that because I get a fasting plasma blood glucose test every time I get my cholesterol/lipid levels tested. I was always told I could drink as much plain water as I wanted but to avoid tea, coffee etc.

If I was responding to you from an earlier post on page one I would have quoted you in my response. In any case I never said you said you couldn't drink any water when fasting. Geez.
