    Does the difference between Non-HDL & LDL tell you anything useful?

    The lipid panel I had done this week was the first time I received a print-out which included Non-HDL. Consequently, I'd never really thought much about it before. Now I wonder what implications might be there. Is it good, for example, to have a small difference between LDL and Non-HDL? Or is it bad? And why?

    These are the figures I had, for what it is worth:

    TC=241, HDL=91, TRG=68, LDL=137, Non-HDL=151, TC/HDL=2.7

    Uff-Da!,

    Well, I think the last thing people need is for yet another number to make their heads spin. But actually the non-HDL value does make the report more complete, because that number (151) takes into consideration your LDL (137) plus the amount of VLDL (14) which comes from your triglycerides (triglycerides divided by 5). So yes, I would say that the smaller the difference is between these two numbers the better off you are.

    So VLDL is worse that LDL? I've never paid much attention to it before.

    LDL and the VLDL portion of non-HDL are apparently usually calculated, not measured directly. Any idea how accurate the calculated values are in comparison to measuring directly?
