Question Red Yeast Rice and monacolin K

We know that the FDA banned the importation of red yeast rice by Pharmanex back in 1998. My question is--do the red yeast rice supplements currently sold in the US contain red yeast rice with monacolin K? If they do not, then they are probably ineffective. If the FDA is still allowing red yeast rice to be sold, I would think those on the market in the US are not the versions the FDA was trying to ban.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to find out if the US marketed products are effective? I've been in contact with someone in Canada, and the price they quoted was about $80 for a month's supply of the Pharmanex version, containing the statin-like ingredient. The US products in health food stores sell for about $12 or less. $12 isn't much, but it may not be worth anything if it is missing the ingredient to lower cholesterol. How can we find this out?

Re: Red Yeast Rice and monacolin K

Hi "arleneb",

I took the $12 RYR and it lowered my LDL from 164 to 104 by my 6 months re-test. I also lost weight, so that could be a contributing factor.

I no longer take RYR. My husband had many adverse reactions to 8 years of statins, including RYR. Cognitive impairment, including several bouts of TGA (transient global amnesia), muscle atrophy, muscle/joint - aches/pains, visual disturbances (amaurosis fugax - visual distortion in one eye), just to name a few. He also took CoQ10 (statins deplete CoQ10), so it's scary to think of how much more severe his side effects could have been.

Our main concern at this point is maintaining healthy levels of triglycerides and inflammatory factors, such as, homocysteine, CRP (C-Reactive Protein) and Lp (a) - Lipoprotein (a).
