    Exclamation NASH (fatty liver disease)

Hello there... my cholesterol is rather high (it was commented I do not give blood samples, I give gravy samples) and one of the lovely benefits is NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis) or fatty liver disease. (fat deposits in the liver)

While you know your cholesterol levels... do you know your liver enzyme levels? Ask to see your blood test results when you have blood taken... you may not be able to make heads or tails of it but when any level is high or low it is indicated on the print-out and the normal ranges are also right there so you can see where you stand. If you see any of the numbers that are off or at the high or low end of normal point them out to your doctor and ask what it is and what it means and take notes. (you can always check it out online when you get home, but only if you know where to look)

I was not informed for **7** years by my doctor that my liver levels were in the high range and may never know how much damage was done because "cholesterol is not something that the young have to worry about, just cut back on the fries and eat some spinache".

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure... so be pro-active... demand to see your files, test results and physician's notes. You have the right to see them and they must provide them to you.

    peny,

What are you doing to stop or reverse the fatty buildup in the liver? Is it progressive?
Have you had one or more biopsies?

(psst, is that from the great old song:
    "Peny, peny bobenny
    Banana fanna fofeny,
    Me my mo-meny
    Peny!")

LOL... yes it is from that song (tried to think of a name to use here and kept singing the name game song and ta'dah... my screen name)

We are trying to control it by diet and cholesterol control measures, it was diagnosed through ultrasound and biopsy and it can be progressive... the scarring that is done is done, but with proper diet and precautions we can keep it from progressing.

The restrictions are scary and mindboggling...
    no alcohol
    no tylenol, advil, naproxin
    etc...

When dealing with the liver and cholesterol just remember that many of the cholesterol drugs are not kind on the liver, so always ask to see your liver levels before you start any cholesterol meds and make sure that as your blood is tested that they check your liver enzymes as well.

You can reverse Fatty Liver Disease - it may take years but you can totally reverse it.

Dr Sandra Cabot M.D has been great in implementing standards to follow such as things to avoid: Aspartame, Sucralose (Splenda), Acesulfame-K (Sunette, Sweet & Safe, Sweet One), and Saccharin. And taking healthy supplements such as Milk Thistle, Fiber, Selenium, MSM with Vitamin C.

Also, you should always have a written copy of your test results for your own records.

    Peny,

Speaking of results, do you know your ALT enzyme level? Certainly, that is one of the indicators that should have caused your doctor concern (if elevated). A doc told me today that ALT are usually seen in people with fatty deposits in liver.

    Re: NASH (fatty liver disease)

I have fatty liver disease. This was diagnosed last year. But then a month later after diagnosis, I was pregnant. After I had my daughter, my liver enzymes were in normal range again, but my cholesterol was higher as well as my tri's. I dont understand. Anyway, I am trying to do my best now to eat more foods that lower cholesterol, and aid in helping the liver. The liver is an amazing organ, even if you have liver failure, you can recover from it. The liver regererates back to its normal self with help from diet and exercise. I read in one of my liver cleansing books that a man had all but a quarter size of his liver taken out, and he done great. Its truely an amazing organ.
