How low is too low?

3 days ago I started an ACE Inhibitor, Lisinipril, for a kidney disorder, not for high blood pressure. My Nephrologist warned me that my typically low blood pressure might drop further, so I check my blood pressure several times per day. My BP has in fact dropped substantially and I am not sure how low is too low.

My normal range (prior to meds) 120/70 - 130/85
My current range (on meds) 95/43 - 85/55 - 100/57

Are these numbers too low? I feel okay, have not experienced any dizziness. I don't fully understand blood pressure numbers other than that it has to do with the pumping of blood. I am worried, especially about my low diastolic numbers (43????) At what point should I be concerned?

Re: How low is too low?

When your nephrologist warned you about the possibility that your normally low BP might drop further he sure wasn't kidding!

But low blood pressure that does not cause symptoms is generally considered to be a sign of good cardiovascular health because there is less stress on the heart and blood vessels.
However, when BP drops significantly(and I question, as you do, a disatolic of 43)...even though in your case we know it's due to medication, I would talk to your doctor about it... Changing meds and/or doasage may be necessary.

Re: How low is too low?

I agree with zuzu, if those numbers stay that low, I would check with the dr. we all know low is good, but yours seems to have dipped a lil too low. I know when I was pregnant, MANY years ago with my children, my BP would go very low, 90/60 and my dr. would kid me and ask if I was alive. I felt fine, a lil tired, but no passing out or anything, so I guess for me at the time it was normal. Until a few yrs. ago, it was always about 118-128/70-76. Geez, wish it would do that now without pills. Good luck....

Re: How low is too low?

Thanks for your replies. My average BP seems to be running about 87/53 since I started the Lisinopril. I'll probably call the nephrologist on Monday, but I see my regular GP next Wed, so I will also ask when I am there.

Re: How low is too low?

I am on Metoprolol 50 mg twice daily since June 6. Since starting the medication, my BP has ranged from a high of 140/92 to a low of 80/60. Except for one syncopal episode on Day 2, when I didn't eat breakfast, did some brisk walking and then had my BP tank, I have been totally assymptomatic.

I agree that the lower the assymptomatic blood pressure is the better, but I don't have any literature to cite. Can you provide some?
