what the hell do i do??
I'm a 23 year old male, 6'4" 200 pounds. Not overweight, but i don't excercise. I've always been athletic though. But no excercise.

About 3 years ago i checked my blood pressure and it was around 140/90, over the past year i've checked it, its been around 140/85. One time it was 130/80, another 120's/80. But mostly in the 140/80-90 range. But i have only checked it about 5 or 6 times in the past year and a half, when i do check it i'm usually nervous. I checked it today and it was 144/84.

this is definately HBP right?

Do i have to take drugs??? How much does excercise help??

does high-blood pressure cause impotence?? That freaks me out more than heart attack ,stroke, and everything in between.

What do you guys think??PLEASE GET BACK TO ME!!

Re: what the hell do i do??
Don't freak out about individual blood pressure readings. BP fluctuates with activity and stress and just daily living.

Where did you take the BP reading? At a store? Some of those monitors are inaccurate anyway. Did you rest for at least 10 minutes before taking the reading? (Longer if you have been particularly active.) The recommendations are based upon resting BP. Do you smoke?

In all probability at your age, if your average readings over a period of time at rest do prove to be slightly elevated, you can make sufficient lifestyle changes to bring it down without meds. What matters to your health is the pressure over a 24-hour day over a period of months and years. So calm down, check it out, and do what you can to live a healthy lifestyle. Unless your pressure is more elevated than that, you have other medical problems like diabetes and/or you have a strong family history of cardio vascular problems, you have plenty of time to start with lifestyle changes, rather than meds. You might start with exercise.

Some BP meds do cause impotence in some people. If you should later need to go on meds and it starts causing problems, ask your doctor to change your prescription to a different med.

Re: what the hell do i do??
thanks for the reply. I don't smoke, have never smoked, nor drank alcohol or taken drugs. But i do have pretty bad eating habits. The readings were taken at clinics or by people that were qualified to take blood pressure.

I actually wasn't just freaked out about this one reading, but my BP readings seem to average around 140/80-90. Anyway i heard that for my age that it is very bad. I guess i need to make some major changes.

Some BP meds can cause impotence, but does high BP directly cause impotence?? I think i heard it does, which as a young man, scares me more than heart attacks.

Re: what the hell do i do??

Hypertension by itself, within reason, won't cause impotence. But nearly all the drugs used to medicate it can and do cause erectile difficulty (and less often, thank God, full impotence.) Consequently, it's the wise man who delays as long as he can getting on this treadmill.
Your BP is more the prehypertensive variety and thus you yourself should keep an eye on it (NOT your doctor.) Get a tester and learn to take your numbers relaxed in a comfortable chair after 5 minutes rest. Take three readings and average them (or discard the first and average the other two.) Taking them more often will get you less and less panicky about it.
Record the results daily over a period of months to get a clear idea of what is going on.

Try to eat far less salt than the American diet and you might be able to stave off the meds for many years.
Excercise and sweat several times a week!
Hypertension by itself, within reason, won't cause impotence.
Very true.
But nearly all the drugs used to medicate it can and do cause erectile difficulty (and less often, thank God, full impotence.)
This is probably true for most classes. However, the research on the ARB class of drugs seems to consistently show that this class actually improves ED. See:

Re: what the hell do i do??
I would be very happy if i could get my numbers down to where yours are, & I'm not much older than you - hopefully i can lose another 20 lb & get there

You need to start some sort of regular cardio workout & monitor your bp at home, but i wouldnt go to a doctor unless you see a drastic increase

I have had nothing but problems from the various bp meds i have tried, and that is the first thing a Dr will do is put you on meds

And no, HBP doesnt cause impotence, but the meds can (thank God i didnt have that side effect)

Re: what the hell do i do??
Relax. When I was 23 (I'm 34 now) , my B/P was 134-180/78 or so consistently. It doesn't sound like a medical emergency at all. Get a yearly check-up. You sound like you are doing fine.
