diagnosed with high blood pressure and pregnant.

I posted a lot of concerns on the pregnancy boards. I need some help and advice from all of you out there who know about hypertension. I believed to have had this before I was pregnant, but was never diagnosed. I think that perhaps it was pre hypertension because my levels were not that high. Well the first time I was diagnosed with this, I went to my primary, and my bp was 150/100, then 140/90 and so on. It was high, and I was about 2 months pregnant. Well, she also noticed that my pulse was about 160bpm. I dont know what was going on with me. But I know it was surely different than before. Well, she had me go to the er because she couldnt figure out what was going on. They did blood tests, ekg and scans on my lungs, everything came back fine. They also conducted that when I was at rest my bp was perfect. When I stood up it rose. Well, my primary perscribed me methyldopa. So I am taking that 2 times a day. She also had an appointment made for me to see a cardiologist. Well, After a few weeks on this drug I started feeling better and my heart slowed down considerably. And of course I was stupid and didnt go to my appointment with the cardiologist. Well, this past week, I ended up getting sick. And my heart rate has gone up to about 100bpm at rest and 108 or more when active. And by when I say active, this is just going from my bed to the bathroom.. and I can feel my heart pounding through my chest and it scares me. Well over the past week, I have been sick with bronchitis, and my heart has been acting very funny, kinda like pops in my chest.. and when I move around I can feel my heart through my chest. My pulse is high, and my bp rose a little to about 130/74. I dont know what to do. Do you think that this is possibly pregnancy related, and that perhaps I should go see a cardiologist? Do you think that it could be a more underlying cause called primary pulimanary hypertension? I am scared, and I feel like at times I get the run around. I worry too much as well, and I am so scared of death for myself as well as my unborn child. With hypertension I can get pre eclampsia or eclampsia. Does primary pulimanary hypertension happen suddenly? Or is it something that would have been found on the lung scan and ekg about 2 months ago? Any help would be great..

I too am in the medical field and have the same advice for you. High blood pressure in pregnancy is quite common. The meds you might take for it should be approved by your ob to make sure it is something which will not cross the placenta. Your ob should be able to advise you whether they think this is more than pregnancy related blood pressure.
It is scary, anything in pregancy is scary, but there are women who are put on bedrest for months due to this or other problems and end up with a beautiful healthy baby.It is very important to be monitored for this. At any sign of rising blood pressure such as blurry vision, headaches, nausea make sure to get medical attention. It can be very dangerous if it goes out of control but as i said there are thousands of women who are monitored closely with this condition and make it through. I don't know where you live but if you are in a small town where the doctors are not familiar with many complications then i would seek out a high risk specialist.
Good luck to both of you. Eat healthy and stay fit.

Re: diagnosed with high blood pressure and pregnant.

My kids are 7 and 4 now. I was on Methyldopa for both pregnancies (3X a day) and inbetween. I had high bloodpressure before I became pregnant with my 1st child. Kind of in denial, saying I will get it down on my own, but when I became preganant I didn't have a choice. It was what needed to be done for my health and my daughters. I don't remember any side effects of the drug. I of course was paranoid thru my whole pregnancy of all the horrible things they say can happen to those with high BP. I think the best thing to do is not to read "What to expect when your expecting" That book scared me to death! I did go to my regular practicioner (sp?) for several months, probably up until the last couple when I was transferred to an OBGYN. He saw me every 2 weeks, until the last month when he saw me weekly. Wouldn't you know it, he was on vacation when I gave birth. Everything went so smoothly, I wondered what I was ever worried about. I was kept a closer eye on. I couldn't have one of the fancy birthing rooms. The nurses kept me in a room close to the station where they could do BP checks more often. It didn't bother me a bit. I was just glad that they were on top of things. I must say that with that pregancy I only gained 11 lbs because I was so paranoid about gaining wt. I am heavier to start with, thus my issues with high bp. I kept on the methyldopa for the time span between my daughter and son and throughout my pregancy with my son. No problems with him either. I did gain more wt though because I had been throught it all before and was more relaxed.

I never had a racing heart rate or the pounding thru the chest while I was pregnant. I did, in the last year, experience kind of a flub dub flip flop in my chest where I could feel the blood draining out of my brain and felt like passing out. Luckily I was sitting down. Then as quickly the blood came rushing back again.
I had all kinds of tests done and nothing showed up. Now occasionally I will feel a little flip flop, but nothing major. I am still on meds and will be for life unless I have a major change in lifestyle.
All I can tell you is that you need to go to your specialist appointments. Do everything you can for you and your baby. The stress of not going and then haveing something happen and wondering if you should have went is not good for your bp either. I went to my regular dr's appointments every 2 weeks while I was pregnant rather than once monthly. Try and exercise every day, whether it is walking or whatever. I know it is hard to accept that you have a high risk pregnancy and all you want is a normal healthy birth and pregnancy. But if you do what is asked of you, you will have a very normal pregnancy. High risk drs are there to take care of you and to keep a closer eye on you than your regualr dr. I only had one visit to a OBGYN in a different city on my 2nd pregancy just in case. My regular dr doesn't deliver, so she sent me to one of the OB dr in town and he looked after me for the rest of my 2nd pregnancy. Wouldn't you know it, he didn't make it to my birth either. The nurses delivered my 10lb 8oz baby boy. No meds either and believe me I was asking for the. LOL !! Anyway ask anything that you need. My son was born 4.5 years ago, so my memory is faded, but I would be glad to answer any questions anyone has. I remember wishing I could find someone to talk to that had some experience when I was pregant.

Good luck and don't worry! And throw that book away!! Sharon

Re: diagnosed with high blood pressure and pregnant.

thank you MoskokaMommy, I really appreciate that. I just worry too much that something bad will happen to me. I dont know why I have the fast heart beat. I mean like today I started monitoring my pregnancy bp, and I am trying to monitor my bp morning and night. Once I take my bp med, it goes down, throughout the day, it goes back up. I just took my bp, and low and behold, it was 129/84 pulse 122. I am getting quite sick of this. Anyway, I have to go to the cardiologist on the 6th of dec. Wish it wasnt so far away, but, what can I do? I dont feel bad and I surely dont feel dizzy, but I dont want anything to happen to my heart. I know that long exposeure to high bp causes heart disease, and I am already on bp meds. What am I to do? Its really annoying knowing that I am doing all I can to prevent problems, it just seems like problems want to follow me anyway. Does my reading sound abnormal? This morning it was about 134/82 and pulse was about 108 and then I took my med and it went all the way down to 111/74 pulse 115. I dont know what to do. And knowing that my pulse is so high I mean is this dangerous? Sigh.. I dont know what to do until I go see the doc.. but, I am 28 yrs old, and 17 weeks pregnant. So far things look good. I have to go to perenatology in 2 weeks. They tell me that its normal to have a fast pulse while pregnant. But too fast can be a problem. Like when I was in my 2nd month, my pulse would go way up there. And in order for it to stay down, I have to lie down a lot and I am not too fond of it. I just dont know what to do. I do thank you for your support. And help. I am just too scared. The other thing is.. I do have panic disorder. I havent pin pointed that to my high bp, and high pulse rate just yet. But well see what the docs say when I go back.

Re: diagnosed with high blood pressure and pregnant.

You are going to do fine and you have to beleive that,I really hope you continue to post, because you are a mirror image of myself except I am not pregant yet.........and the reason for the yet is because i to have panic disorder and have done nothing baut panic about getting pregant with that and a high BP, it is nice to know that you are moving along so good, i do understand that you have a high pulse, but that is true, when you are pregant it will go up, now normal heart rate is anywhere between 80-120, so look at it as you are OK...what was your pulse when you were not pregant, mine runs around 90 without BP meds, but on the med i am on now, it is down in the 70, you are going to be just fine, are you going to a high risk OB, let me know how things are looking, please keep me posted, who knows when i can have a positive pregancy test.............thanks CHRISTINE

Re: diagnosed with high blood pressure and pregnant.

When I wasnt pregnant, my bp would go up and down., my bottom number would be great, but my top number, would go up now and then, but always go back down, sometimes to 90/60. But, I know that my bp would go up due to panic disorder. My pulse, well it always was around 75 or so... sometimes 80, and if I worked out about 90. But its always been good. I have had heart tests, like ekg, and blood drawn and such to see if my heart was good. Its always beat the same, same pattern etc. No changes. I have had docs listen to my heart they say it sounds good and clear and strong. I just dont understand how can this pregnancy cause so much fuss. Once I get these answers I will def let you know. I am a big girl. I am about 5'8 and weight 310. I used to weigh, 340, even then my pulse and bp were ok. I lost weight and was about 316 before I got pregnant. I have lost weight and gained a little then lost on this pregnancy.. And I am not eating a lot of crap.. or at least I try not to. Maybe the bigger you are, the faster the heart pumps. I dont know. The docs dont seemed too concerned. But they want me to go to a cardiologist so I am going to do that just to make sure I am ok. Which I hope that I am. I am scared, but the more I know the better off I will be. I will keep in touch.
