    What is normal blood pressure

I went to the doctor last week and my blood pressure has gone down to 140/80 and he said that is where we want your blood pressure and that was good. Mine was always aroung 160/100. Does it depend on what is normal for you. I know that 120/80 is perfect but I am thinking that 140/80 is normal for me. Is that the way it works?

I think 120/80 is considered normal and acceptable. Your current BP is acceptable but your previous BP was way too high and can be damaging to your blood vessels.

140/80 might be good for you, but it's not really normal. Work on diet, exercise, and weight reduction to bring it down a bit more. That number is good enough not to turn to bp medication, but if you don't take some prudent action it coud easily go back up again. Also try cutting way back on salt, which is the cause of some hbp.

Re: What is normal blood pressure

    Pall7778,

I am already on blood pressure medications. I am on two differnt ones and that is what brought it down this far. I am losing weight eating right and exercise as much as I can because I also have rheumatoid arthritis. One of the drugs (Prednisone) is what gave me high blood pressure it the first place. I am still taking Prednisone because my RA is out of control. I am hoping that once I get a new drug and get off of the Prednisone then I can reduce or get off the blood pressure medication. As for the salt I have not eaten or used salt in cooking for over 15 years. So I am doing all that I can. I hate takening medications so I will do all I can to get off the medications. I don't know what to do any more. Thanks for your reply.

Usually normal blood pressure ranges from 180-190 for the top number(systolic) and 80-90 for the bottom number (diastolic) however each individual will vary a bit.

faithie, 180-190 (top #s) are considered high bp, not normal. A medicated bp of 148 is a little high, especially using two bp meds. My mom's bp was 140/72 one time and her old gp kept adding meds trying to bring it down to at least 130/80.

Just curious, where did you get the info that 180-190 top numbers are normal?

My mistake, 120-130 are normal. I must have had my fingers on the wrong numbers when I started typing.
Also, I have had hypertention for years, and my doctor put me on a combination of Cozar and Norvasc and it has helped tremendously. My BP used to run 190-206/100-110

Re: What is normal blood pressure

My mom has had hbp since she was 25, she's 53 almost 54 now. She tried norvasc, too many side effects, lisinopril, allergic reaction, toprol xl, too depressed ad tired, verapamil, swelling and breast enlargement, hctz, lasix, torsemide and the list goes on. They all lowered her bp to a decent bp, but the side effects were horrible.

Now she is on avapro and clonidine. She will probably quit the avapro due to severe itching and she'll go back to the small dose of verapamil and clonidine. She has no side effects from clonidine.

If she does have a side effect from clonidine, she's not complaining. She might be addicted, it helps her to sleep well.

One of the medications I was on caused me to itch, and my doctor told me to take benadryl. He said that some medications will release hystimene into the blood and the benadryl will help block it. She could always ask her doctor about it.

    Normal BP is below 130/80.

Not for everyone. All my mom's doctors (endo, gp, cardio) stated for her bp, 130/80 was good. My mom suffers hard to control severe hbp. Once her bp went down to 113/62 and she was hospitalized so they could see what was happening. It turned out she was bleeding internally.

What numbers are high? Not every single person will have the same bp and feel well under 120/80. Doctors and scientist is giving what they feel is normal, but only your body can tell what is normal for you.
