Newly diagnosed High , please help!

I had my blood pressure taken last week and it was 127/88. I was told the 88 was a bit high and to come back this week.
I went back today and it was 127/96, higher still, now I have to go back again next week. This is the first time my blood pressure has been high. I am a 40 year old female, little alcohol and do not smoke.
Is this very high? Should I be at all concerned? What does it mean if the bottom figure is higher than it should be, but the top one isn't? Any help greatly appreciated as getting stressed now thinking about it!

Re: Newly diagnosed High , please help!

If your diastolic pressure remains at 96, you will be diagnosed as hypertensive. Normal BP is less than or equal to 140/85, I believe. If you have been sick, this can cause your BP to increase temporarily.

There are many reasons for "isolated diastolic hypertension", and sometimes the cause is unknown. I have higher diastolic BP than systolic, i.e. 120/85. If it makes you feel better, the blood flow to and through your coronary arteries to your heart, occurs during the diastolic phase (while the heart rests). So, you have good pressure behind the blood flow to your coronary arteries. My diastolic pressure may be higher because of coronary artery blockages, which I am known to have.

You need to check your BP for awhile before you become too worried about it. If you don't have a good monitor to use at home, drop by your doc's office or a local pharmacy and keep a check on it. Good luck and don't worry too much yet.

Definitely check it @ home because you are probably nervous now when you go to the docs because they told you it was a bit high!!! That is what happens to me - as soon as I know I am going to the doc - my bp goes up!!!

Hi thanks for replies.

The doc said if it is still high a third time, then I would need a blood test. What will that show, in relation to high blood pressure?

I would take it several times on your own before reaching any conclusions. It's only a little high, and isolatic diastolic hypertension is unusual.
