Smile Tropol xl and heart rate

    Hi everyone,
You all have been such a great source of information to me . Thank you !
Now I have a question . I have been taking tropol for 2 months ( after trying a few others ) . It was helping bring down my bp , but this last week-end it shot up sky high . Went to doctor on Monday and he increased my dose to 100mgs and put me on a diuretic . Now my bp is good , but my heart rate is so high . When I get up in morning it can be 103 . This is making me crazy , I feel like i just ran a marathon . I have read so many bad things about tropol , but Ive been through so many and this is the first time my bp is normal ,without any side effects , except I am a little more tired than usual .
I also take xanex for anxiety . Don't know if my anxiety is making my heart race or if I am having anxiety because my heart is racing ? What should i do when my heart is racing , should I take a walk or lay down ? I do go back to my doctor on monday . He takes walkins free of charge to check bp . They take me right in no waiting . I have a wonderful doctor ! If anyone can give me a little insight here . Thanks Amy

Re: Tropol xl and heart rate

    Hi Ammy,

Wouldn't it be ironic for a drug that's used to TREAT a fast heartbeat, among other ailments, to actually be causing it to race?

Fast and irregular heartbeat is usually experienced by those who have just stopped their use of beta blockers, or are gradually reducing the amounts of this drug they take. I had such an experience myself. It was scary while it lasted. There are some drugs which may cause the heart to beat fast. I find myself in a situation very similar to yours. My blood pressure is perfect right now. What keeps me from jumping with joy is my faster beating heart and the unpredictability of my blood pressure.

My heart rate changed after being put on 50mg HCTZ (a diuretic). It went from normal 60-70 during the day to resting over a hundred. I am still on this diuretic at 1/2 the dose now (25mg). My resting heart rate was same as yours or higher last week. After the dosage adjustment it is somewhat lower now, but not by much.

I think your doctor should review the dosage of your diuretic. I don't believe the beta blockers are responsible for the increase in your heart rate. Because our reactions to drugs vary and strange things happen, there's always a chance your body cannot tolerate the increased dosage of the beta blocker. Make sure to mention all your concerns to your physician. He can adjust the dosages (lower) and perhaps add another BP med, if necessary. Good luck with your blood pressure control!

    FG,

Glad you are on a lower dose fo HCTZ. Maybe you only need 12.5mg. I'm going to try lowering my dose of HCTZ in the future to 12.5mg. Mcgowan says most people only need that much. Glad your b/p is better. I wonder what causes the increased pulse rate. I'll have to think about that. Fam

    Hi,

I'd love to have an explanation for the increased heart rate. I don't seem to be the only one with this type of a problem with the Hctz. It is safe for me to use (I checked in the physicians' manifest) in regards to my kidneys (until stage III). I know it is effective, it just does not seem to agree with me.

Not surprisingly, things have changed once again. As of this morning, my blood pressure was up by 30/10 points from yesterday, and my heart rate has dropped. I don't know whether to be glad or not. It seems that I cannot have one with the other lately. (good blood pressure AND an acceptable heart rate) I'd like to understand what affects my blood pressure so. For the first time ever, my doctor has shown determination to bring my blood pressure to optimal levels. I regard his sudden interest in my blood pressure and well being as highly suspicious. Perhaps my increased creatinine and my upcoming visit to the blood pressure specialist prompted his concerns? After all, he is the sole physician responsible for the day to day maintanence.

Re: Tropol xl and heart rate

Thanks for answering my post . I have only been on the diuretic for 5 days . 25mg , have been on it before and it helps , geezz I was retaining so much water I looked like a little porker . But this problem with my heart rate has been ongoing for along time . Probably 21 years , thats when I had my son who I love dearly , but is putting me under much stress last two years . More so recently . It seems older they get , the bigger thier problems . BP this morning was 119/ 71 . Heart rate 100 . Thanks again , Ammy

Re: Tropol xl and heart rate

    Hi there...

I was put on Toprol XL... started on 50 then moved to 100 when the 50 was not getting the results needed... at 100 it seemed to get even worse, so I was weaned back off and later put on Verapamil 240(a calcuim channel blocker) along with my regular Diovan HCT (160 mg diovan with 25 mg HCTZ).

While nothing seems to stop 'break through' extremely high BP or tachycardia it does seem to be working for the most part. (The break through parts are caused by sudden releases of adrenaline due to another condition)

Not all medications work for all people... everyone has different body chemistry... so it may take a bit of trail and error to get the medications that work best for you.

One thing I see as a possible problem is the constant barrage of advertisements for new drugs on the market... BP meds mixed with cholesterol meds, new combinations of key chemicals, whole new classes of drugs formerly used for other conditions. It is all to easy for us to watch those ads like children peering through a candy store window... the people on TV taking them seem to get instant face lifts and free vacations to tropical islands that are a constant 72 degrees with zero humidity and no children plotting destruction in another room. A month later the lawyers are having their commercials asking if you took the drug, and if you did and had sudden death to call them, you could sue... (my father keeps saying that he is going to call one of those numbers sometime and say "yeah, I am one of them people that got that there sudden death from that pill and I wanna sue") So, while at the same time we want the new miracle drug we are afraid to ask for it because of those 'side effects'.

Re: Tropol xl and heart rate

    Amy,

As far as I am concerned, the Hctz works like a charm. It reduced my blood pressure like no other drugs (combined) did. I believe I'd do fine on just this one drug alone (for blood pressure). I'll see if I can find a connection between an increase in heart rate and the Hctz. I guess the fast heart rate is a separate issue for you and unrelated to Hctz.

Your BP is great! Your resting heart rate is not.

Re: Tropol xl with benecar not working

I posted last week about my bad side effects with Diovan and that I had been changed to Toprol XL and Benicar ( to stop the extreme tachycardia caused by the ARBS.)
Well I am up to 30mg. of Benicar with 200mg of ToprolXL. Before I take this medication my BP after coming in from tennis (3 hrs of it) is 150/80.
Every day within 3 hrs. of taking this medication my BP is up to 180/100.
I have never had antihypertensives actually raise Blood Pressure. Has anyone else out there experienced this?
Before all this changing of medication I was on Cardura/Clonidine for 10 years.
I cannot now tolerate the Toprol and the benicar and I have to keep taking intermitant Clonidine to bring my BP down. I have been on the phone to the MD about this everyday.
Has anyone had similiar problems here. All this just is doing nothing and making things worse and the Toprol has me nauseous, to boot.
    Thanks,
    Karen

    Kat,

I believe I have experienced this...after 3 years of living a nightmare on bp meds, I took myself off of medication only to have my systolic and diastolic drop 20 points...I consider myself pre hypertensive now as my numbers can go as high as 140/85...but usually I am considerably lower than that. When I was on meds, I was LUCKY to see a 130/90!

I might add that although I have lost some weight I have not lost the 25+ pounds of weight I gained while on meds...so I'm actually heavier than I was when I was originally diagnosed with hbp. Also, the only dietary changes I've made were to not use the salt shaker, and to drink skim milk so I don't think diet is a major factor in the drop in my pressures (although the changes couldn't have hurt).

I have reason to believe that treatment for my sleep apnea has reduced my pressures, but I have no idea by how much because I was on meds before I received cpap treatment....and my pressures only went up on meds... I initially attributed this to an increase in my weight (because the meds did bring my pressures down within the first month of taking them) but since my current weight is higher than my pre med weight was, and my pressures are lower than my pressures on bp meds, I have to think it was the meds!!! My theory is the side effects were so severe they elevated my pressures...but at this point I have only circumstantial evidence.

    Bethsheba

PS I haven't taken my bp for several days, but this am it was 109/74.

Re: Tropol xl and heart rate/side effects

    Thanks for responding.
You know it never occurred to me that the side effects could be so bad and intimidating that that is actually what is making my blood pressure go up.
3 hrs. after taking the medication, I feel so awful I can literally hardly function.
The Toprol has given me severe insomnia at night, nausea and therefore I can't hardly eat some days. During the day I am a zombie. I cannot afford to be paralyzed and made into a sick person by side effects of medication. This has never happened to me before.Previously to this , all these years I just took my BP meds and went on with a normal life, never gave it a second thought.
Having to take the extra clonidine to get my BP down also totally puts me out cold. I live alone, can't afford to be like this. Does anyone know if there is another Beta Blocker with less horrible side effects than the Toprol ? I'm about to throw it all out the window and just hope for the best.
    TIA
    Karen

    Kat,
That UNRELENTING insomnia prevents me from taking any beta-blocker for BP or occasional angina in spite of their being extremely effective.
I tried atenolol for 30 days and got less sleep than prisoners being interrogated at Guantanamo...the insomnia was UNBEARABLE. I am normally a very easy sleeper.

So now I can take only the occasional propranolol to stop a migraine because the propranolol wears off after 3 or 4 hours. But even with propranolol I cannot take it in the evening.

I don't know that the side effects drove up my pressures...it's a personal theory that I haven't been able to support with research. (Although there is research out there that says pain and sleep deprivation can elevate pressures---it's just to the best of my knowlege, the pain and sleep deprivation in their studies are not caused by med side effects).

According to my medical records, mypressures in August of 2003 were 200/100, my weight was 206 pounds and my dose of hct was increased to 50.....I wasn't monitoring my own bp until the beginning of this year so I other than my medical records, I do not have documentation of my pressures climbing.

My doctor said in feb/mar this year (when I complained that no one had ever discussed lifestyle changes with me) that my pressures were too high to make a difference (I believe they were about 170/??? while on meds at that visit). It was shortly after that visit that I stopped meds (without medical supervison) altogether because I was not sleeping well on the amlodipine (I don't recommend doing this) only to discover my pressures dropping daily for about 4 weeks.

I presently weight 205 pounds (which is still about 15 pounds higher than I was when I was placed on hct), do not use a shaker, do not exercise (and yes, I know I should), and I am off meds. My pressures were 140/81, 133/79, and 123/79 this am. I sit and wait 5 minutes before taking them, and take them about 5 minutes apart--and yes, I take them while drinking coffee which temporarily gives an elevated reading.

I KNOW that I had high blood pressure when I was initially prescribed medication. I know that cpap can reduce bps. But I didn't go on cpap until after the medication and my pressures and med doses just kept rising despite the medication---until being med free.

    Bethsheba

PS Please note that I consider myself to have experienced moderate to severe side effects on hct, lisinopril, benicar hct, atenolol, and amlodipine.

I, too, live alone and am self supporting. My three year nightmare with side effects made it impossible for me to work and it cost me my life savings...I am still unemployed and uninsured.

And that is why it is sooooooo important to learn all you can about the medications BEFORE you start taking them...
