    I collapsed today

My dr. placed me on high blood pressure and cholesterol pills 3 weeks ago. I was already taking norco, ibuprofin, skelaxin, flexiril, lunesta for my back. At the time he had me stop eating read meat as well. Last week he had me quit meat all together. I was feeling fine the first 2 weeks, but this last week I've been feeling nautious. Today I went to lunch feeling nautious and had a beer. I wore my thermo underwear and a sweatshirt and it was pretty warm for me. I went to the bathroom and took off my sweatshirt. I felt worse when I got back and started to feel like I was going to get sick. The feeling came from my lower body to my top. I then collapsed to the floor for a couple of seconds and was helped to my seat. I drank some water and came home. I've lost 6 pounds since seeing this new doctor. Can anyone give some kind of explanation or idea what could have caused this? Thank you

My goodness, Michael, I am sorry to hear you had that bad experience. That is a scary thing. I don't have an answer for you, but perhaps you should call your doctor right away and let him know what happened. I wonder if all those pills you are taking might have caused a bad reaction. Just a thought, but it would be a good idea to have yourself checked out. Maybe your b/p went down too low?
Good luck and hope you feel better.....let your doctor know!

Michael, if you are on a diuretic, you may have a low potassium or other substances called electrolytes. You should contact your Dr. or go to the ER. Please someone else to drive you. Fam

    Hi Michael,

I agree with Judy and Fam. Side effects and interactions of your many meds are a likely cause of your collapse. Your doctor should be informed.

How good is your blood pressure control? Before I started treatment for my hypertension, I collapsed several times at work. I experienced dizziness, nausea and vision problems each time it happened. My episodes were hypertension related without a doubt.
Some drugs have GI effects. These get worse if you drink alcohol and you can get really sick. People on multiple meds should not drink much alcohol. Next time, ask for a glass of water or a cup of coffee instead of a beer! When eating out, I always ask for both. It works for me!

    Re: I collapsed today

Thinks for your responses, I tried calling my dr.. His office was closed today due to this bad storm were having over here. I't been 7 hours since the incident and I still feel a little nautious. It's not as bad where I think I'm going to throw up. I'll be trying to get some answers tomorrow. I am a little nervous about sleeping tonight. These past 3 weeks have been very interesting. Oh yeah, I'm doing a sleep study in 2 weeks due to I've been told a stop breathing when I sleep.

Michael, I hope your feeling better, and hope you can get in to see your doctor asap. Good luck with that sleep study, hope that works out ok for you. That's another scary thing being told you stop breathing when you sleep. My brother in law went through that problem, also, and now wears some kind of "mask" thing on his face at night. Sorry I don't know much about it, but wishing you the best on finding out what's going on with yourself.

    Take care,
    Judy

    Re: I collapsed today

Hello all, I went to the ER last night just to be sure. I had various test done ekg, lab, chest e-ray, ct scan. The doctor said they couldn't find anything wrong with me. I told him the story about my day and how I felt in the restaurant. He said that's what probably made me collapse. He said with me feeling so hot and on the blood pressure meds it probably made my blood pressure drop and slowed the blood flow from my heart to my brain. I saw my regular doctor today and he prescribed Toprol xl instead. He also prescribed promethazine for the nausea. He wants me to wear some kind of device to monitor my heart. I would wear this all day and over night. They would then plug into another machine for the results. Thanks for the support

    Michael,

Do you have a reliable blood pressure monitor so you can monitor your pressures at home? This is very, very important....if you monitor daily, you would be able to see if your pressures are dropping too low, which can cause weakness and collapsing (other posters have mentioned other reasons).

If you don't have a monitor, do get one before you are evaluated for your sleep. Sleep apnea, if treated, can bring pressures down considerably! Your doctors may or may not be astute enough to monitor your pressures regularly after cpap treatment and if they don't your medications may be too strong, causing an overdose. I have reason to believe this is one of many problems I encountered. I believe that the use of my cpap dropped my pressures enough that my bp medication (only 1 med, min to small dosage) was too strong for me causing symptoms of overdose...so do monitor your pressures yourself so you can let your know if your cpap treatment drops your pressures--that way they can decrease or eliminate your medications.

You say that you are nervous about sleeping? Is it because you think you stop breathing at night? If that is the reason, don't worry (at least short term). When you stop getting enough oxygen, your brain wakes up your body and tells it to breath again. You probably don't remember doing this even though it can happen many, many, many times over the course of the night. Long term, this can create havoc with the cardiovascular system for starters...but two weeks to wait for a sleep study is not long term, grin.

Do let us know how you fare.

    Take care and good luck!

    Re: I collapsed today

Thank you for your most valuable info Bethsheba, I know for a fact a stop breathing. When I had back surgery the nurse came in and slapped me around to wake up because I wasn't breathing. They told me it usually happens when you sleep on your back. That is the only way i'm comfortable way to sleep and haven't slept on my back since. I sleep on my side or stomach, but don't get must rest. What I would give to sleep 8 hours instead averging 4 a night. Lunesta has helped me so much with this problem. I do believe this is what killed my father. Back then we didn't know what this was. We use to watch him sleep and take forever to breathe again. I feel much better today without taking Nifedical. I started on Toprol xl today and feel fine. I will make sure I monitor my pressure as well. Thanks again

    Re: I collapsed today

Hi Michael, Glad to hear your feeling better. I am glad you went to the ER and got checked out; at least you know that things seem to be ok with the tests they did there. When I get hot, I feel dizzy and feel like I am going to faint at times. I get those hot feelings when I am having lots of pain in my back and neck, but I think my b/p goes up from the stress of the pain. I guess a person can get that way from either low or high b/p. Bethsheba gave some good advice, you should monitor your b/p to see what is going on with you. Hope you do good on the Toprol, and good luck again with that sleep study.

    Keep us informed!
    Judy

You're one of the lucky ones, if you're aware of the dangers of sleep apnea. I, too, have a family history of apnea...although other family members had been diagnosed and treated, it never occurred to me that I might have it until another family member pointed it out to me.

The other thing I wanted to mention, is that I STRONGLY believe my sleep problems were worse with certain blood pressure medications. I mention this because I blamed my sleep problems on hip pain (that often woke me in the middle of the night), excruciating back pain, restless leg, getting up to pee at night (nocturia), etc. It was only after about 3 years when I had forgotten to take my bp medication that I realized that although I probably had sleep apnea since I was a child, I could FUNCTION with untreated sleep apnea....and it was the bp medication that was really interfering with my sleep. My primary and my sleep specialist denied this reality, but I no longer take bp medication and I would now describe my sleep as normal (I do use a cpap). This may or may not apply to you but I bring it to your attention to make you aware of the possibilities....and to save you time and possibly pain. It took me three years to figure it out for myself as the doctors were no help here.

If you have a recliner, you may find that you'll sleep better sitting up...for your breathing and for your back.

Hope I haven't rambled too much. Hope you're feeling better on the new med.

Take care and keep us posted.

    Bethsheba
