Re: Meds, Meds and more Meds

I went to see my GP this past Monday. I told him what I read about taking norvasc and atenolol together, and he told me that it's not uncommon for these meds to be perscribed together. I wanted him to lower my doses, but he told me that since my BP is good (it was 130/70 in his office), I should continue. I will speak to my cardiologist, but that's not until September. As far as my diuretic goes, I never felt sick from it. it's combined with the Micardis, and I find that taking it late afternoon works for me. When I have blood tests, the potassium level is checked.

Re: Meds, Meds and more Meds

    Thank you for the update.

Well, prescribing the beta blockers and calcium channel blockers together may not be uncommon, but it certainly is not that common, either! There's a reason for the warnings about the possible drug interactions and additive effects of these two classes of drugs that can be found in certain pharmacological sources. I thought your doctor would make a noncommittal reply if asked this question.....and he did!

Under certain circumstances, the two drugs combined can be more effective than either one alone. For instance, the CCBs -alone or combined with the beta blockers or nitrates- reduce the number and duration of ischemic episodes in myocardial ischemia and relieve the pain in transient myorcardial ischemic episodes. There are other instances when they can be combined, with careful monitoring of the patient. There are certain clinical states in which the combined use of these drugs is absolutely contraindicated and can result in irreversible consequences. My impression is that if there are no adverse cardiological symptoms when both drugs are used, all is well.

Glad to hear your blood pressure is well controlled. Unless you are experiencing unacceptable side effects or the effectiveness of your meds decreases, there's no reason to change them.

Flowergirl - thanks for your reply. Not that I don't like my GP, but I will feel better when I speak to the cardiologist about the atenolol and norvasc. I was just reading the side effects of Micardis Plus, and it said that cholesterol and triglyceride levels when increase when taking HCT. You just can't win!

    What is my blood pressure?

It was 111/70 and 115/76 when I got home from work. I don't measure it during the day (yet). I doubt it changes much (116/76 when I woke up). I took most of my meds this morning anyway, and did not get dizzy at work.
Well, it's 133/85 and 131/86 now, so I am somewhat surprised. That's up by quite a bit from my usually low late evening readings. I am not sure anymore whether that's good or not. I think my blood pressure has been surprisingly low lately (for a person with severe hypertension). Since I don't seem to have hypotensive symptoms most of the time, maybe it really isn't too low?
I wish I could figure things out.

I find that I usually get different reading whenever I take my BP. I really don't take it alot now - as I did when I first got my monitor. My doctor advised me to take it this way: take it 3 times (waiting a minute or so between each reading) - throw out the first reading and then take the average of the other two. Your BP is very good in the morning.

Re: Meds, Meds and more Meds

    Arlmon,

your doctor's advice is a good one. My specialist first measures the arm to ensure the right size cuff is used. He often discards the first reading, records the second, and takes the blood pressure once more at the end of the session. I often do the same at home and take two consecutive readings. I find that the first measurement is usually higher.

I have been trying to establish a pattern in my blood pressure fluctuations. This is almost impossible to do without frequent measurements throughout the day. Those are possible only on my days off. Yesterday, I started out with 90/62 and 103/63 at 2:30 a.m. At 5:00a.m. I measured 100/62 and 103/63. My evening measurements (8:00pm) were 110/71 and 110/73. At 11:00pm. (without any evening meds) the blood pressure was 105/72 and 102/73. I hope it did not dip too much while I slept. I woke up with 126/84 and 123/84 readings, which were higher than normal (110-115). Though my blood pressure level sounds good, its fluctuations and their timing do not make much sense. What do you think? I think it does not fluctuate much anymore. It used to be quite the opposite, with huge fluctuations in blood pressure and high readings at night. I should somehow try to do a better job of monitoring my blood pressure. I just can't deal with it at work.

How is your blood pressure? Good? I hope so!

Re: Meds, Meds and more Meds

Flowergirl - My BP was 130/70 last Monday afternoon at the doctor. I haven't taken it since, but I will. As I said, when I first got the monitor, I was taking it way too often. When do you sleep, if you're taking your BP at 2:30 a.m. and 5 a.m.?!!! Your readings are very good. And yes, I don't anyone who has the same readings every time they take their BP. I notice that when I go for a walk, my BP is different than it was before I went out. I've come to the conclusion that high blood pressure is complicated and there are so many meds with so many side effects out there to complicate it even more! In my case, like so many others, we have to take meds to keep our BP regulated - no choice in the matter.

Re: Meds, Meds and more Meds

I don't sleep much. I have a nighttime (and daytime) acid reflux. This causes coughing and choking, making it difficult to sleep well. There is none of that when sitting up. That's how I sleep sometimes. My frequent trips to the bathroom at night don't help.

I have met my new doctor and am very impressed. He says that my blood pressure is PERFECT, and even with the diastolic in the low 60's at times not too low. Apparently, it is much safer the way it is, even with the occassional dizziness. I get dizzy less and less often so that's not a problem anymore. I have to take my full doses of all medications. I am getting the labs done tomorrow morning and have some tests pending. Getting a bit anxious about the results, especially cholesterol. (I stopped the med a few weeks ago) There could be additional meds I was told, depending on what the labs show. Since I asked about reducing my medications, not increasing them, I hope NOT!

Your blood pressure sounds good. I can now stop worrying about mine. I don't want to become obsessed with it. I just hope it stays at the current levels. I think I'll keep taking the readings as usual (twice a day), because my blood pressure has never been reliably stable and can be unpredictable. I agree with you that circulation and blood pressure are very complex issues.

    FG,

I'm thrilled for you!!! A good Doc & an excellent b/p-what more could you want?

If you could figure out why your b/p went down, you know you might become the next millionaire!!! Does it have anything to do with your dropping your cholesterol meds? Or was that after the fact?

I got my biopsy & had quite a reaction to the local lidocaine injection-went home & slept for 2-3 hrs. I was just wiped out.

Keep us posted on your labs etc. Fam

Re: Meds, Meds and more Meds

thank you, Fam! This doctor is a take-charge kind of a guy. He wants to leave no stone unturned. I like his total commitment to the patient. I truly admire his extensive knowledge of chemistry and pharmaceuticals. He knows all the drugs, their side effects, interactions and contraindications and puts them into context as they relate to the various health issues.

I am glad you've had the skin biopsy done. It is always such a relief to get the tests over with. I hope they didn't take a big chunk of your skin out and that there's plenty left! It does not surprise me you got so tired from the extra drugs combined with the Labetalol in your system. I hope you rested afterward and feel fine now. I also hope you'll get the results you are hoping to see.
