should I be concerned?

Hello. 24 year old female... healthy as far as I know. About 5'3 and 140 pounds. My blood pressure is 144/74. I have been eating a lot of fast food lately and gained some weight (about 15 lbs) since I have been so busy. Is this number something I should be alarmed about? I know 144 is high, right? Not sure whether I should find time to squeeze in a doctor visit as I am very busy and will be for a couple more months. Would cutting out fast food likely make me go back down to a normal level? I have been experiencing headaches everyday (kind of feel like tension headaches), and I don't know if it is related to this or not. Is this a bad blood pressure reading for my age?

Re: should I be concerned?

The 144 is a little high, 140 is the high end for that #. It may be the food, tension, diet sodas (fake sugar raises some people's pressure), birth control pills also raise some people's pressure, cold medicine, energy drinks, lots of things can raise it. Try to adjust your diet some and see if it comes down. Also keep track over a few weeks, one or two readings isn't enuf. Headaches can be caused by high BP but tension also, and tension raises BP. Keep track, relax, don't drink diet sodas and see if it drops. If not, check with your doc.

Re: should I be concerned?

Is your b/p reading accurate? Those at the pharmacy most likely aren't accurate. An ER or fire station will take your b/p for free if you don't have a monitor. Get the weight off & exercise along with a better diet might keep you from eventually having to take these b/p meds & possibly have to put up side effects. Fam
