Opinions on my blood pressure please...

I am a 28 Year old male. I feel I am in decent shape with the exception that I am a tad heavier built. I am 6'3" and 250lbs. I have had issues with anxiety off and on since 2007 (mostly on). Anyways, when I last saw my general physician about my anxiety, my blood pressure was elevated. Everytime I even see the blood pressure machine in the docs office, i wig out and start getting extremely anxious. I mentioned my concern and that I was interested in sorting out whether or not my elevated bp levels were caused by anxiety or something else. He referred me to a Hypertension and Kidney specialist. During my initial visit with this specialist, my anxiety was out of control. He basically gave me some orders to get a ton of labwork done and instructed me to take my bp at home for a few days and bring in the results.

At home, of course, I feel much more at ease. However, I wanted to share my blood pressure levels with folks in order to get some opinions as to if they would warrant any concern or if I would be considered OK.

Here they are for the past couple days:

IMHO you do NOT have high B/P- there is only one reading on your list that would be of any concern with a physician- why is he refering you to a specialist and why is he allowing you to take your pressure so many times a day? seriously- that's not so great for your body- 5 times a day at the most seems safe and you would still have enough information to help your doctor make any kind of decisions about medication- most of us that suffer with true hypertension (180's over 110's) would LOVE to have your pressures- please keep us updated when you return to your doctor- good luck- (have you tried medication for your anxiety- some xanax or ativan maybe?)

Those are fantastic numbers. You do not have high blood pressure.

That is great to read. Seriously... Thanks to both of you for your input.
My wife bought me a bp machine back in 2007 during the height of my stress and anxiety/panic issues. I monitored for a short while then stuck the machine in storage. I honestly was so distraught over my readings at that time, i just couldnt stand to take my bp any more. We stuck the bp machine in storage and since then I have always had this feeling in the back of my head that I have issues and it caused an additional layer of anxiety for a couple years. I am on no meds. I had tried celexa for a few weeks for anxiety. I still have a script of Xanax from back in 2007 that I carry everywhere with me, but I have not taken any since 2007 as I am just so worried about taking meds.

Again, thank you both for your input!

It is not recommended to take BP repeatedly. I would give a kidney away for BP's like yours.

Re: Opinions on my blood pressure please...

I just hope that I can stave this off for years to come. I am not so optimistic for my middle-aged years, but who knows?

I would like to ask, what negative effects can be had by taking blood pressure excessively.

I have my follow-up with this specialist this upcoming Wednesday (8/19). I cant explain the weight lifted off of me and I feel more confident about this visit. Although, i do have quite a few labs that I will also be following up on too, so, fingers crossed all should be good to go.

    I will post the updates..

    Thanks again!

    Hi

Your average Diastolic over the seven readings was 77, which is at a healthy level, while your Systolic average was 136, slightly high, but not too bad.

I noticed, in some of your previous posts, that you have had problems with very high blood pressure peaks, at times. Are you still getting them?

There are many different causes of high blood pressure and many different "triggers" of high blood pressure peaks. If someone encounters a personal, high blood pressure trigger, then their blood pressure soars. In my case, dust is one of my worse blood pressure triggers. It causes my blood pressure to increase significantly.

However, I've got to agree with the others, that the blood pressure readings that you have posted are at a fairly healthy level.

Re: Opinions on my blood pressure please...

    Machaon, Thanks for your insight.

I have had some peaks in the past as I was trying to get a grip on what was happening to me/my body. It took quite some time, money and dr. visits to realize the bulk of my issues were anxiety related. I have since come to terms and have sought ways to alleviate the issue's on my own. I feel I have made some decent progress. The remaining piece of the puzzle has been my blood pressure. It was those peak times that had me so worried and afraid to confront any issues head-on. I was always telling myself that the elevated pressure had more to do with the panic/anxiety i had experienced than anything else, but in reality, i wasn't sure. It was much easier to just try to forget about it, although it was looming in the back of my mind for quite awhile. The thought of neglecting such an issue and the possibility of causing more damage if in fact I did have a bp problem was a motivator for me.

I did some more reading on the best-practice for taking blood pressure and found that it is best to take it after sitting quitely for about 5-10 minutes. All results I have recieved are from running down stairs, strapping on the cuff and testing immediately.
Maybe that would explain the steady decrease as I was getting more relaxed while sitting?

Today after work I will start test again only after I have sat for a period of 5-10 mins and less frequently.

Would you agree that this may yield a much more precise average?

    Thanks again.

Re: Opinions on my blood pressure please...

Here is an update on what I found out last Wednesday (8/19) from the specialist (kidney/hypertension doc) and today. All of the labs that were taken looked good, a few of the test that were taken were were aldosterone, cushing's test, cortisol, thyroid, catecholemines and all looked good. The only thing that was elevated was renin. Apparently renin is pumped out by the kidneys (renal's) and if too high, bp can be high, conversely, if renin is too low, bp can also be elevated.
It was uncertain the cause of elevated renin.
I provided my home blood pressure measurements that I had gathered from the week prior to my visit and he said they look fine. I felt a big relief.

He called my PCP right when I was in the consult with him and he told my PCP all of the test results and the bp measurements I had. I sensed that my PCP was still wanting more results or tests as i listened to the conversation from the specialists side.

Ultimately, the specialist and my PCP agreed that they would schedule me for one last CT scan of my kidney's/adrenals just to check for masses, stenosis or something else lurking in there causing my anxiety/hbp.

Well, I had my CT today and with the technology of the medical system, my results were available for me online by the time I got back home.

I would like to share these results and hopefully someone could help shed some light on some of the details.

    Here they are:
EXAMINATION: CT ABDOMEN WITHOUT AND WITH INTRAVENOUS CONTRAST.

Technique: Spiral CT of the abdominopelvic cavity was performed
with craniocaudal coverage sufficient for evaluation of the
clinical concern(s). Precontrast imaging is employed for
evaluation of luminal calcification. The examination was
performed following the intravenous administration of 100 cc
Isovue-370. Arterial phase enhancement imaging was achieved with
a timing bolus of contrast for detailed evaluation of the
vascular structures. There were no immediate complications
    reported.

    Findings:

Noncontrast images demonstrate normal size adrenal glands,
without nodularity. No atherosclerotic calcifications are
identified within the abdominal aorta or its branches.

Abdominal Vessels: The abdominal aorta is within the anticipated
range of findings for age. There is no evidence of aneurysm.
Incidental note is made of aberrant origin of the left hepatic
arterial branch directly from the aorta..
The celiac, SMA and IMA arteries are patent and opacified with
    contrast.
Single renal arteries are present bilaterally which are normal in
caliber, without evidence of stenosis. There is symmetric renal
    artery opacification bilaterally.

    Lung Bases: Clear.

Kidneys, Ureters and Bladder: There are no renal calculi. There
is no perinephric inflammatory change of evidence of
    hydronephrosis.

Solid Organs: Visualized portions of the liver, spleen, adrenal
    glands and pancreas are normal.

Gallbladder and biliary tree appear normal.

Bowel is within normal limits for a noncontrast evaluation,
without bowel wall thickening or dilated loops of bowel. There is
no inflammatory change within the mesentery.
Retroperitoneum: There are no pathologic-sized lymph nodes.

    Osseous structures: Normal.

    IMPRESSION:

    1. Normal CT angiogram as above.

My interpretation is that all is fine, however i am concerned with this segment:
"Incidental note is made of aberrant origin of the left hepatic
arterial branch directly from the aorta.."

Anyone know what this is all about?

    Thanks in advance!
