Exclamation HELP PLEASE! MAOI and high blood pressure

When I tried increasing my dosage from 60 mg to 75 mg I experience a blood pressure spike for about 30 minutes after I took my nighttime dose (45 mg). I'm terrified of going off of this medication as it is actually helping me. I've been to scared to tell the doctor also. I've gone back down to 60 mg and am waiting for the doctor to tell me it's ok to raise the dose (he hasn't said it's ok yet). I plan on trying to split up the doses and see if it still has the same effect. Am I acting like a crazy person? Am I an idiot who is putting their life at risk? Honest feedback would be much appreciated.

Re: HELP PLEASE! MAOI and high blood pressure

How high was your blood pressure increased? I looked up the side effects of MAOIs and it seems that low blood pressure is a more common side effect, however if you are consuming foods high in tyramine, which are mostly aged or fermented foods (like cheese), and over ripe fruits/vegetables, then it can cause your blood pressure to raise.

Why did you increase the dosage? You should never increase dosage without a doctor's consent, but at the same time you should never be afraid to be honest with your doctor.

Re: HELP PLEASE! MAOI and high blood pressure

I didn't have a blood pressure cuff around so I couldn't tell. It just felt like my heart was pounding like I had just sprinted or something like that. It is possible that I had had too much coffee that day. On 60 mg I have drank as much as 7 cups of coffee a day ( I know, addict), but perhaps the 75 mg increase made me more sensitive to the high caffeine intake.

I increased the dosage because I was feeling lethargic, unmotivated, and most of all anxious. It had helped very much with the depression, but I was still feeling disconnected from reality and almost tired, but not. Just spacey and uninterested. So the reason I went on this drugs was to address the anxiety, so I'm desperate to feel the positive effects that so many report in reference to anxiety relief. I'm so close I feel!

Re: HELP PLEASE! MAOI and high blood pressure

Are you depressed? How long have you been taking MAOI's. Sometimes exercise and eating right will correct depression without meds. Don't stop taking your meds but start out slowly with an exercise program. Also take vitamins and drink plenty of water.
I hope this helps you. Debra
