26yo Male with High Blood Pressure

I was diagnosed with high blood pressure at age 24 and have been struggling with it ever since. I went to the doctor after I checked my blood pressure at Walmart,it was 160/100, and he immediately wanted to put me on medication. Being somewhat naive at the time I didnt question it and have been on it ever since. Just recently I have been trying to figure out a way to get it down and get off the meds. I am very fit 5'11" 185lbs and I workout 3-6x per week. I recently quit drinking, 2 months ago, which saw little to no change in my BP and have been eating as close to vegetarian as possible. Some other notable items may be that I have a fairly stressfull job, I have had bouts with anxiety and panic attacks, my cholesterol is somewhat high, and I have a few family members with high BP. Any words of wisdom or insights from similar experiences are welcome. Am I stuck with these meds the rest of my life or am I missing something? Thank you for your feedback.

Re: 26yo Male with High Blood Pressure

Im 22 with high blood pressure. Just about everything you described is exactly the same with me. I take Benicar 40HCZ and was put on meds at 20. I have also recently been improving my diet and exercising, and like you I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks.

I don't believe that we have to be on meds our whole life, I try to see it as a temporary necessity until I am able to lose all of the weight I need to get off the meds. Remember, it took us a long time to get hypertensive and it's going to take us a long time to return to normal

I am getting alot of 120-130 systolic readings on a large part of the day which I didn't get before, even on medication. Although I do 40 minutes of cardio "stationary bike" and I can tell you that I absolutely notice my bp stays low 4-5 hours after exercise. Im talking 110-120's.

We are both probably genetically pre-disposed to hypertension. Although I believe that it is absolutely possible to eventually get off meds.... I sure hope so.......

Just keep exercising and eating right bud.

Re: 26yo Male with High Blood Pressure

I developed htn at 20, have been on meds since 23; now 33. My BP has slowly worsened over time actually. Like you, I have always been active, exercise always has been and remains my hobby. I do not have history of anxiety as you do. I hate to say that you will likely require BP meds to have a healthy BP......You have a healty weight, you exercise, and eat reasonably well, thus there is little else that you can do IMO. Try to improve your anxiety, of course.

Have you been worked up for secondary causes of hypertension?? renal artery stenosis, hyperaldosteronism, pheochromocytoma, coarctation of the aorta; are uncommon but possible causes of HTN that can be corrected, and are more likely in someone with HTN at a young age. That would be your ticket out!!!

Re: 26yo Male with High Blood Pressure

Is any of this possibly "white coat" hypertension? I was told I had it at 24, but went to a specialist who said I was just nervous and took me off meds. Sometimes it is 120/80 at doctors now, if I can relax, and others it is higher... but it's always normal at home.

Have you measured at home, or considered 24-hour abmulatory monitoring?

Re: 26yo Male with High Blood Pressure

    I am 26 aswell.

Since last week my blood pressure increases I am 130/90

So I began exercising, eating almost veggie again.

I also have a history of anxiety, panic attack and more. Have had many fear disorders throughout my life starting in my teens.

I also just stopped smoking, I only smoke cigarettes for 3 weeks, and began eating a lot, this all wast mostly caused by the urges the meds gave me.

Also I am using 4 different type of medication to prevent my psychosis.

I have been in the clinic for 4 weeks for my psychosis, now I am home again.

The meds also increases my blood pressure. Having heartaches, it's not funny. I hope nothing is wrong with my heart.
