facing surgery
i think this is ok for me to post here since i have hiv/aids..:)

my throat has been bothering me the past year
the symptoms i have been experiancing are
a sore throat
it sometimes feels like something is swelling up
against my adams apple, giving me weird feelings thru
the nerves in the area,i have had slight pains in my shoulders and chest
i also have a unusual dry throat,i wake up in the night
and have to go drink something.

anyway i have been working with a doctor
and i have been thru alot of tests.
they did a ct scan of my throat a few weeks ago
and they said one side looked larger then the other.
the doctor said in his opinion it was probably nothing
and i have 2 options
one is to let it ride and come back for a follow up
in a certian amount of time.
or the other option is surgery
knock me out,then
to go in and get some samples of tissue to examine.

well,i know something is wrong with me so i elected the surgery.
i have 2nd thoughts about it and
i wanted to speak to my hiv doctor about it
but my appointment was canceled because they didn't have power and thier computers got wiped out by the storm.
i don't know what i'm doing now
i have pre op appointments next week...

Re: facing surgery
I wanted to wish you well and hope you can get to the bottom of it. Is there any chance it has anything to do with your thyroid? I've had thyroid nodules and had 1/2 my thyroid removed, and some of the symptoms sound similar. Did they do an ultrasound on your thyroid?

Re: facing surgery
that is one of the things i want to discuss with my hiv doctor
that and about another gland that was mentioned to me.

they claim nothing is wrong with my thyroid in my tests
i did ask the ent doctor.
i had another hiv doctor tell me it has nothing to do with hiv.

i know if something is wrong,i want to be proactive,
then wait around before it is too late to help.
this surgery is happening too fast on me.
the storm messed up my hiv doctor.
heck,it messed up many other things around here also.

Re: facing surgery
not sure what kind of tests they did on your thyroid, but if it's just blood tests you might not be getting the whole picture, it could be in range and they won't look further. most times doctors just test the tsh which is misleading. I'd ask for an ultrasound if I were you.....that's easy, non-invasive and might shed some light.....

Re: facing surgery
that is sort of what i was thinking after i have had more time
to think about it all.
this all comes at you fast
all they did was blood tests i believe for my thyroid.
they have done alot of other tests to me.
that something else could be done before i go thru with this surgery.
i wanted to throw it at the other doctor first
but things have been messed up with the storm.
i have 17 days before the surgery happens
so i have a little time to back out of it if i want to.

Re: facing surgery
17 days is enough time to schedule the ultrasound and get the results to have a little more info to make the decision on if you want to go thru with the surgery, and what type of surgery it might be. Good luck to you and don't worry......

Re: facing surgery
thank you for the support
things should work out one way or another.
i figure to find out monday whats going on with the hiv doctor
and if not, i can discuss more stuff with my ent doctor when i get the chance.
i have some pre op appointments next week.

the storm has thrown everything off around here for me

i had a appointment with the hiv doc 10 days ago and it was cancelled
so i should of had some answers and a direction already.
all it has done is had me thinking alot.

Re: facing surgery
I'm sorry the waiting is making you stress out, not to mention the storm. I know people from work in our corporate office that live in NY and NJ and some of their stories are horrific. Some have lost homes, cars, power, etc, but everyone is happy to be safe. We heard today about the gas being rationed. Hopefully you didn't get hit too hard, but it sounds like it's disrupted life as you know it temporarily. You will get thru this, you're a strong guy. One step at a time, one day at a time, and pretty soon it will be behind you.
