How long does it take for HPV to go away?

How long and how severe is HPV? Does it mean I will no longer be able to have intercourse?

Your body will always keep the virus. Just like your body keeps the chicken pox virus. The virus can be "fought" or "inactivated". The virus can also be reactivated later in life - it is then called shingles.

HPV stays in the body. Many people are able to fight the virus so it doesn't cause future problems. Other people can't.

Those who are able to "fight" the virus usually take several years.

You can still have intercourse. I personally think this is something one needs to share with future partners. He/she can make a decision as to whether he/she wants to proceed. With high risk HPV, almost every sexually active person will be exposed to it at some point in his/her life. Most people don't have problems with it.

Re: How long does it take for HPV to go away?

How long - depends on how healthy your immune system is.. some people never see symptoms manifest, others take awhile to clear

How severe - all depends if you are speaking of high risk or low risk. Low risk HPV is responsible for genital warts. High risk, on the other hand, rarely has any external symptoms and can only be found during a pap smear (and then if the ob/gyn has a reason to do an HPV test - it test if the high risk strain is present)

If it is low risk and you are experiencing physical symptoms because of it, get with a Dr. and get it treated. There are treatments available that can remove the external affects of genital warts.

As to intercourse, there is no reason you can't as long as you feel physically comfortable with it.

Just make sure you partner is aware, because HPV can be transmitted via intimate skin to skin contact, while practicing safe sex lowers the risk of transmitting HPV, it does not REMOVE the risk entirely.

And what Pickle said (ended up double posting somehow!!)

The virus had the possibility of staying dormant and become active years after the infection.
