Abnormal cells/HPV

Today I was told I have LSIL (abnormal cells), and that this is caused by HPV. My doctor gave me most of the information and I am not so worried, as it sounds like it will go away.

However, some of the things she told me were a bit confusing. I have been with my boyfriend for a year now, and we have both been faithful. I am not sure how long I have had HPV or how I got it. I was told that my boyfriend most likely has it too. She did not say anything about avoiding unprotected sex- does this mean since we both have HPV, that we don't need to be worried about protection?
I realize protection is important and I'm sure the lack of it is what got me in this mess, but we have not used it for the past 6 months and am unsure if this means we need to start.

My doctor also stressed to not smoke. My boyfriend is a heavy smoker, and she stressed that I must not be around his smoke, or have unprotected sex with him (until he quits smoking), and I can't kiss him after he smokes unless he brushes his teeth.
How does his smoking effect the unprotected sex? Is avoiding smoke really as important as she is making it sound?

I am looking up information on the internet as well, but I wasn't able to find answers to all of my questions.
Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Re: Abnormal cells/HPV

Yes! Smoking is as bad as she is making it sound sorry to say. With my hpv my doc said being around a smoker is the worst thing I could do to myself. Remember that your immune system is what is going to try to kick the virus out and smoke hurts your immune system. Staying away from smoke, getting enough sleep, low stress, and exercise is the best thing for you. It sounds like you recently got the hpv diagnosis so keep yourself healthy and hopefully it will go away. Not to stress you out but my nurse said I'm young and healthy so it should go away but it didn't and it's been a long road since then. Let me know if you have any questions!
