HPV, no symptoms, long-term relationship, protection needed?

I was recently had a pap smear come back abnormal and was told that is was most likely due to HPV. Because I am young, my doctor was not worried and said that all I needed to do was to keep healthy and come back for another pap smear in a year. I understand that usually women are able to get rid of the infection within a year or two. My question is about my relationship. I have been in a long-term relationship for a while now and am assuming that we both have the same strain at this point (we do not use protection). I know that it is impossible to figure out who gave it to who, so I am not worried about that at all. I am wondering, if it is necessary to use condoms from now on until I clear up the infection. I understand that if we were to have new partners, that protection would be needed, but while we are together, is it necessary? The reason why I am confused is because I have read a lot of forums saying that HPV is not a ping pong infection and that we can not keep passing it back and forth. I have no idea if that is the truth, so I came here looking for answers. Any help is appreciated

You are right that most likely you and your partner share the same strain. How long have you been together? I would not even worry about condoms at this point, because HPV can be spread even WITH condoms.
