I have a question about hysterectomy

I'm 63 yrs old and have always had fertility/female problems. 20+ yrs ago I went through menopause. Since then I have had spotting 2 other times with 8-9mm lining thickening and had to have a D&C both times. Each time the biopsy turned out to be endometrial fibroids. Well I again started spotting for a few days, had an ultrasound and the lining is now 16mm thick. I'm going for a biopsy in a few days but my Gyno said I am definitely looking at a hysterectomy. Did anyone that had this thickening have lower back pain? I'm kind of scared it's cancer. Is back pain normal? My ultrasound said "fibrous uterus"
    Thank you for any comments

I am sorry you are dealing with this.

I do know of women who had fibroids that complained of back pain. I don't know if they had a thickened lining or not. However, I have read that fibroids can make the lining appear thicker than it is because imaging cannot always differentiate the fibroid areas from the lining itself.

It seems odd that your doctor would say you are "definitely looking at a hysterectomy" when you have not even had the biopsy. However, hysterectomy is one of the most overused surgeries so many women are told they need one or should have one when it is not necessary.

I hope your biopsy is negative and you get proper, restorative treatment if any is needed.

Thank you! Hoping for a negative biopsy. How many D&C's can one have? Is it ok to keep on doing them?

I have read that there are some risks of D&C's and some increase as you have more. But hysterectomy has its own set of risks as well as adverse effects / consequences.

Thanks, I'll be having a convo with my Dr as soon as we know about the results.

I'm in about the same situation as you...I'm 60 and I have uterine fibroids also which cause bleeding...I had a D&C last year and they found polyps and a fibroid...10 months later bleeding again and more testing and they found more fibroids...My doctor said probably a hysterectomy also...and when i was in the office i thought yeah go for a hysterectomy because i am tired of this bleeding...but now i'm thinking i jumped to conclusions too fast...the doctor told me just as well take it out now before it turns to cancer in 5 to 10 years...Trying to get a second opinion is almost impossible...Everywhere you call if you are a new patient has a 3 month waiting period...So I just can't decide what to do...another D& C or hysterectomy...My back can hurt also..

I went to a Gyno oncologist. He did an exam and said no need for hysterectomy yet (64 yrs old now) He did another D&C (my second) He just wants me to let him know about any new bleeding. Fingers crossed nothing yet but you know how that goes. Good luck to you.

Re: I have a question about hysterectomy

I am kinda going through the same thing you are..I'm 60 and I am dealing with uterine fibroids..A year ago I had a D&C and they removed some polyps and a fibroid..Well 10 months later I had a "period" again...so back to all the testing again and now they found more uterine fibroids...When my doctor and I were talking she pretty much thought a hysterectomy also...at first I was okay with that but then the more I thought about it I think I better get a second opinion...My doctor said since my uterus is having unusual activity I could sooner or later get cancer... Also I can have back pain with my fibroids also...Please update us after you talk to your doctor...Being a menopausal women is not for the weak..HA

Re: I have a question about hysterectomy

I am younger than you by about 20 years, but, I've had lower back pain, bleeding/spotting/fibroids and cysts. I had one surgery in 2011 (Myomectomy). Here I am again, I'm suppose to get my cervix basically scraped out and biopsied but, I've been looking at hysterectomy. My doctor doesn't seem to be 100% on board, but she's not off board either. She said it's my choice and when I go in for my pre-op appointment we can talk about it. I also have extreme fatigue and am slightly anemic.

But, at your age and having the spotting I'm hoping you got the answers you were looking for. And, I'm not saying you're old (just that spotting shouldn't be happening).
