    leaving the cervix

I have been told that it is possible to have a hysterectomy and leave the cervix in place. One of the reasons for doing this is that you are more likely to have normal orgasms after surgery if the cervix is left in place.
I would be interested to hear from anyone that has had a hysterectomy, with or without removal of the cervix if this is the case.

I just had a hysterectomy done 2 weeks ago and left my cervix. The reason I did that is because of vaginal prolapse later on in life. My doctor told me it could happen although there are no known studies on it. Not sure about orgasms yet as surgery was just done and I am in the healing process. But I'll let you know when I find out...LOL

    Hi 15-08

As Debbie mentioned, one of the best reasons for leaving the cervix in is because it helps support your other organs. There is an increased risk of prolapse without it.

Also, the surgery may be longer, the bladder may need to be moved out the way which increases the risk of bladder problems post surgery.

Orgasms may be affected by taking out the cervix but for the majority of women, it is ok.

    Talking Re: leaving the cirvix

I had my total hysterectomy 8 years ago and the consultant left the tip of the cervix as i was told every consultant is different in how they do the procedure.

Unfortunately i had noticed nothing different in my sex life, it has been the same as before so i think it depends on your outlook but one think i do know that having the hysterectomy was the best thing i ever did! Feel fantastic and more energy and also dont have to worry about contracpetion or how many sanitary products i need to waste my money on every two weeks or so!
Just have to get my HRT every six months!

    Take care

I had everything removed but my cervix and no period. Yet, I was told by my doc that you CAN bleed with a cervix.

I would talk to your OB about this to be on the safe side.
