Who does the surgery for rectocele?

I had a hysterectomy in Nov. and now due to chronic constipation and the lack of a cervix, I have developed a rectocele,

[A rectocele occurs when the fascia a wall of fibrous tissue separating the rectum from the vagina becomes weakened, allowing the front wall of the rectum to bulge into the vagina.]

Who does the corrective surgery for this? Would this be a gyno or a GI surgeon? Does anyone know?

Do you have any urogynecologists in your area?

I have never heard of such a thing, but I live in a major metro area, so no doubt.

Re: Who does the surgery for rectocele?

I had a hysterectomy when I was 28. I am now 57. I've suffered with chronic constipation ever since my teen years. The OBGYN never recognized the problem. The Gastro doc never recognized the problem either when I told him I have to push the stool out. So, after finding out as much as I could with the help of the internet, I looked in the local hospital directory, searched specialists, and went to a colo/rectal specialist. Made sense to me. If you can't get stool out, you go to a doc who specializes in that sort of problem. I had the test to show the bulge in the rectum and am planning to have the surgery in July by a colo/rectal specialist. It is being done through the rectum, not the vagina. As you stated, the problem is the muscle between the rectum and vagina. I'm confident that once this muscle is repaired, and I continue taking Mirilax, I will function much better.

Re: Who does the surgery for rectocele?

My gynecologist is doing it through the vagina, since that is where my stretched tissue is, due to three huge babies many years ago. The rectal tissue is fine. It only bulged into the weak vagina because of the weakness there.

Yet I suppose it can be done from either side. It is like repairing your fence on your neighbor's side , same result.

Mine is June 15 and I am not looking forward to it, but planning to write a report as soon as it is over and I am home again.

I wish you luck with yours!

    Love,

    Martha

Thanks for the info Martha and good luck with your surgery. I'll be looking for your progress report the end of June! I now have more questions for my doctor regarding which side of the fence and why. This is a great resource and I really appreciate the candid answers/responses posted here.

Re: Who does the surgery for rectocele?

i am wondering the same thing. should it be a colon rectal surgeon or a urogynocologist. does anyone Know the name of a good urogynocologist in MA, RI, NJ or NY. I heard there is urogynocolo center in RI.. 2 YEARS OF CONSTIPATION AND NEITHER MY OBGYN OR GASTROENTEROLGIST FOUND THE RECTOCELE. BUT ANORECTAL TESTING AT AT COLON RECTAL UNIT FOUND IT. They said it was small but to try biofeedback but i am going to find a good urogynocologist just to check and going to have a deforgram next week.. frtom what i have read, it looks like the pig skin graft creats less probelms than the mesh..

Re: Who does the surgery for rectocele?

My surgery went very well. I came home on the 3rd day. On the 2nd day the catheter was removed and I was able to pee. I did not have a lot of pain.

When I went home I probably walked around too much and strained myself closing windows during a rain shower. I had heavy bleeding for around 5 hours, this was on Day 6) and had to go to the ER. Unfortunately it was a Saturday and the non gynecologist on duty tried to find the source of bleeding with a vaginal examination, but said "there is too much blood in there; I can't find the source of the bleeding." He told me to come back or see my doctor if it did not slow down considerably. Since it was slowing down and blood tests showed no serious blood loss, I went home. Since then I have only had a light bloody discharge which is normal, so I will wait until my post op exam in around 10 days.

I sit on a donut cushion, otherwise it feels like I am sitting on a porcupine - but I do not need any pain meds, haven't for a week since I left the hospital. Today is day 11. I'm glad I had it done.

    Rdt,

I'm sure you have found someone by now since this post is ancient, but I think Eman Elkadry is good; I saw her a few years ago for pain during sex after childbirth (big tear from a big baby, then stitches). She is a uro-gynecologist in Cambridge, MA.
