Saw the Rheumie re: positive ANA

Hi everyone - not sure if you remember me, I posted that I was nervous that I had had a positive ANA test and was going to see the rhemie. I'm 30 yo, relatively healthy, have had Raynaud's (mild) since I was about 14.

First of, he told me my positive was 1:640, which made me nervous. He told me 640 is the highest this test goes to, so it could potentially be higher. But he kept telling me that a positive is a positive, despite the numbers. He said it's like being pregnant - you either are, or are not. Which isn't what I had really read on these boards, so that made me a little nervous.

Anyway, he examined me, said he definitely see signs of Raynaud's in my fingers (which is funny b/c I didn't have a flare up while there or anything but he said he could tell). But he thinks I'm fine. He says I have no signs of Lupus or anything else otherwise. And he said that most "additional symptoms" come up within 2 years of having Raynaud's - but since I've had it since I was 14, he thinks it's no big deal.

He's sending me for some additional bloodwork "to be safe" but thinks I won't find anything.

Does all this seem normal to you guys? I'm very happy to say I'm "healthy" and it's only from the Raynaud's - but it seemed almost too good to be true. Any input is appreciated... I'm just wondering if my second series of tests come back normal, should I be relieved and never see him again? Or do you guys think I should see another Rheumie just based on those numbers?

Incidentally, apparently I saw this guy when I was 20. Don't remember at all! He didn't have my file anymore but my social sec # brought up that I had been there in 1994. He said it was probably b/c of a positive ANA, b/c my primary had referred me and that's probably why he sent me there back then.

Hi, first of all, I am glad everything has gone well today. I am 19 at the moment, and have currently had Raynaulds since I was around 16. Just lately I have been feeling really off it, and am showing some of the symptoms of lupus. I've had the bloodwork done, and my ANA has come back positive. My Doctor is referring me to someone who specialises in this sort of thing.

I am glad that he thinks you have nothing to worry about. However, i'd just be careful about this. A positive ANA result may not be worrying at first, but its always good to be sure and keep constant checks. I'm not trying to scare you, its just that a positive ANA is usually a pretty good indication that you have an auto-immune issue developing. Just keep checking. If you are healthy, then good... and I hope it stays that way. I hope you continue to do well, and have no further problems.

But as I said, keep an eye out just in case though. Keep in touch. And all the best.

Re: Saw the Rheumie re: positive ANA

1:640 is definitely not the highest this test can register, unless he meant that particular lab that was used.

I've heard of them being 1:1280, 1:2560, etc. I guess it just depends on the values the lab use.

Mine has been 1:640 for about 4 years now. My Dr. also told me that there is most likely some auto-immune process developing.

I lately have some elevated kidney functions tests that my Neph says could be connected to the pos. ANA.
