    Autoimmune diseases in men

Are there any men here who have multiple autoimmune diseases and if so, where are you going for help? Cause I know more women suffer than men but we want to find a doctor that specializes in male autoimmune diseases (in the NY area), My boyfriend so far has been diagnosed with celiac (and has been on a gluten free diet) and hashimotos's thryroiditis.

    Thanks,
    Lynne

    Re: Autoimmune diseases in men

While there is a slight increased prevalence in autoimmune diseases in women, there are many men who suffer from autoimmune disease. As such, there is really no such thing as a doctor who will see only men with autoimmune diseases.

Celiac disease is often associated with other autoimmune diseases and Hashi's obviously is one of them. I think what your boyfriend really needs is to be seen by an internist who can investigate him for other signs of autoimmunity.

My son, a man-child at 14, has several autoimmune diseases, but we are not in the NY area. We're in Northern CA. I would suggest you look for an Immunologist as well as Endocrinologist (thyroid) and GI (celiac). The Immunologist might be able to shed light on the multiple autoimmune disorders. My son see's one as well as the specialists for his specific diseases. Autoimmune diseases can 'cluster'. My side of our extended family is chock-full of different a/i diseases and several of us have 'clusters' as my son does.
    Good luck!

...or why not just look for all of that in one in a general internist! You don't have see a subspecialist for every system of the body. General internists (who are NOT family doctors) are very well versed in the complexities of internal medicine, and the whole idea of autoimmune diseases clustering may be a rarity for laypeople, it's quite commonplace for people trained in internal medicine!
