hemoglobin level is very low.. 6.5

Hello.... My one year and 2 months old niece have Hemoglobin level of 6.5 and having 102 fever . While visiting the doctor , he said your kid's hemoglobin level is severely low and need blood transfusion as soon as possible. but em not in favor of transfusion.
any idea about this??? please help me in this regard.

More to add is "her mother was died when she was only 3 days old, so she has not mother feeding at all". last year, when she was only one month old she had the same problem (fever and HGB level 5.6) and doctors advised for blood transfusion which I refused and went to senior Child health specialist doctor in Lahore,He advised us to avoid blood transfusion and gave us medicines after that she got improved day by day and ultimately her HGB level grown up to 10 and we were pretty satisfied.
and Now She has same problem as last year.
    Please please any kind advise...

Re: hemoglobin level is very low.. 6.5

There are several causes of low hemoglobin levels.
    1. The main cause is poor diet. If the child doesn't eat enough foods with iron in them, that can cause anemia.
    2. If the child is ill or sick a lot, this can cause iron levels to drop.
    3. It could be from a hereditary condition called Sickle Cell Anemia.
    4. It could be from injury.

Its probably not 3 or 4, it may be because the child was born early, and never received enough nutrition at an early age. One reason that children have low iron is if they drink too much milk, and don't eat enough food, they don't get enough iron. If you don't eat meat, you need to find other sources of food full of iron, such as sweet potatoes and beans, legumes, lentils.
Also, you can give an iron supplement, in the form of children's vitamins.
When you give iron, take with Vitamin C, or a drink that has Vitamin C such as orange juice for better absorption. Do not give iron with milk or formula.
Iron can change the color of their poop to green, but this is normal.
A normal iron level should be above 11.
    Hope this helps. Best wishes.
