Baby BMs

Hi there, Just have a quick question. My lil one is almost a month old and only has one bm a day. Poor baby is so gassy and in pain. She is not constipated in fact she had diahrrea for about a week and just now it is starting to get back to normal. I took her in last week to the doctors and they just shrugged it off and said she probably just picked up a stomach bug. Well Im starting to worry. She is now pushing 30 something hours with still no bm. Should I take her back?

Re: Baby BMs

I can't say whether or not it's normal, but wanted to let you know my one month old can go up to 2 days w/o a BM.

Re: Baby BMs

I know my dd was a little constipated at 2 months and the doctor told me to use the bulb syringe, fill it up with warm water and use it as an enama, (im sure it is sp wrong)well, it did help her. I dont know if that will help you any.

Re: Baby BMs

Both of my kids went up to 4 days without a BM. I was told by both of my kids doctors that this was normal, especially for breastfed infants. My DS was always gassy and in pain, my DD is always fine, so I think it had little to do with BM's and more to do with just plain gas. My DD farts and burps all the time, my DS never did either. It just stayed all bound up in his little tummy.

My DD is now going on day 4 since last BM and is happy as a little bug.

You may want to rule out lactose intolerance, though. Especially if the gas and diahreah keeps up. That was what was wrong with my DS. He was sensitive to dairy, whether from my diet in the breastmilk or the formula.

Re: Baby BMs

Totally normal for the little one to go for a few days without the BM. My doc said up to a week is OK. And they said they were only concerened if the poops were really hard. DD goes a day or two in between poops and she is the QUEEN of gas!! But it doesn't bother her. Look into your diet if you're nursing, or perhaps try a soy formula if you're bottle feeding. You could also try the OTC gas drops or a product called Gripe Water. If the gas is really bad and causing a lot of pain the docs can also prescribe something a bit stronger.

I know its strange when a baby goes from being a newborn and pooping like 5,6,7 times a day to nothing for a day or two.
