    Question Washing new clothes

Do you wash all your baby's clothes before they are worn? I do but I got A really cute outfit that I think will not look as good after it's washed.I want her to wear it first but I am afraid of a rash or something.

    Re: Washing new clothes

I wash all my daughters new clothes before she wears them. I want to make sure they are clean (since they are usually handled a lot at the store) and some babies have very sensitive skin.

I started washing all of her clothes before she was born, but stopped halfway through and we've never had any problems with any of the clothes. I think its a case by case thing.

I didn't wash anything before hand. My baby was fine.

I wash everything first because of how many different people have touched it before she got to wear it. You never know. I would take the outfit and wash it by hand with something gentle like woolite and that shouldn't take away from how cute the outfit is.

    Re: Washing new clothes

I do wash all of my DDs new clothes before she wears them. There may not ever be a problem, but if you get caught in the rain it will probably cause a rash. This is because of the formaldehyde they put on clothes.

Fabrics are treated with formaldehyde for the following purposes:
    -Permanent press
    -Anti-cling, anti-static, anti-wrinkle and anti-shrink finishes
    -Chlorine-resistant finishes
    -Stiffening on lightweight nylon knits
    -Waterproof finishes
    -Perspiration proof finishes
-Moth proof and mildew resistant finishes
    -Suede and chamois

not all clothes have it (and they may not treat baby clothes with it.)
But you should atleast rinse it.

How anal are you about germs? To me, I would wash it first. Would you want every person in the mall to hold your child? If not, to me at least, it is the same as not washing something. On the other hand, people say germs don't exist on dry surfaces. But you never know who touched what before they touched the clothes on the clothes rack at the store.

In addition, you never know who bought the outfit, put it on their baby, only to return it because it didn't fit or whatever. Kind of makes you think twice about the clothes you buy for yourself too, you never know who tried it on before you!

Do you wash all of your new clothes? I never did that is why I didn't wash babies clothes. I think its the same as switching detergents, it can possibly cause a rash in the future. I use Tide for my baby's clothes, not baby detergent. In the future he may end up being allergic to the other detergents. That's my views anyway, and it worked out fine so far.

    Re: Washing new clothes

I didn't really say that I do wash all of my new clothes, I was just saying that it does make you think twice about who may have been wearing it before you bought it. It's probably a good idea to wash all of your new clothes, however, who always has the time for that?

    Re: Washing new clothes

I almost always wash our clothes before we wear them, but always always wash the babies, because of what Andilyn said, you never know who took it home and put it on their kid, and how dirty their kid might have been! I bought an outfit from the store and when i got it home and ready to wash, it has these odd brown streaks all inside. It was a baby sleeper thing, and they were near the butt, so I figured it was poo and took that back!
As far as our clothes, grownups try on clothes and you never know who tried them on.

    Re: Washing new clothes

Okay I washed it and hung it dry and it still looks like new. I work in a clothing store and I wasn't even thinking about that stuff I was just worried about dyes and treatments. NOT poo streaks

I wash everything too...my baby seems to have senitive skin...I know that some clothes contain chemicals...that's how I got a rash from a pair of socks...it itched like crazy on my entire ankle right at the sock line on down...has to go see the doc to get rid of it !!

So, I don't take the chance...some things I have washed and then they don't fit her...what a bummer.

    Re: Washing new clothes

I wash all the sleepers or everyday clothing items before wearing. We had a cute velvety Christmas outfit I didn't wash because I wanted it to look just right. Ava is not sensitive to things, so that's why I don't worry anymore.
